Insert "Columbia University Logo" Here
So Columbia University let thugs assault Minutemen speakers appearing on campus. Columbia does not seem too concerned. Take the right political stance and you can get away with anything on Morningside Heights. Maybe the Minutemen should say they are bisexual, that might change the tone, you think?
In the interests of edgy free speech, supporters of the First Amendment should put the Columbia logo on this fine product and distribute it broadly. Women, too!
Friday afternoon update: Columbia President Lee Bollinger grunted out a statement in favor of free speech and said this, in part:
The disruption on Wednesday night that resulted in the termination of an event organized by the Columbia College Republicans in Lerner Hall represents, in my judgment, one of the most serious breaches of academic faith that can occur in a university such as ours.Of course, the University is thoroughly investigating the incident, and it is critically important not to prejudge the outcome of that inquiry with respect to individuals. But, as we made clear in our University statements on both Wednesday night and Thursday, we must speak out to deplore a disruption that threatens the central principle to which we are institutionally dedicated, namely to respect the rights of others to express their views.
This is not complicated: Students and faculty have rights to invite speakers to the campus. Others have rights to hear them. Those who wish to protest have rights to do so. No one, however, shall have the right or the power to use the cover of protest to silence speakers. This is a sacrosanct and inviolable principle.
Actually, in my mind, not pre-judging the outcome is not "critically important" at all. Swift, harsh, and permanent justice is "critically important" in addressing these anti-First Amendment terrorists. The statement doesn't talk about what interests me: punishment for the perpetrators, be it a thorough caning across their bare bottoms by Bollinger himself, expulsions, a long stretch at Gitmo, or immediate deportation if at all possible. When the punishments kick in, then I'll know Bollinger is serious. Until then -- I don't believe a word he's saying.

Its not true that Columbia University 'let' them rush the stage. If Columbia wanted to stop the event, then they wouldn't have given permission for the event to occur. The vast majority of students think what happened is ridiculous, and everyone, including the University itself has condemned what happened.

"The University deplores the disruption that took place last night at the "Minutemen Forum" sponsored by the Columbia College Republicans at Alfred Lerner Hall. The specific facts surrounding the incident are under active investigation by the University and so it is premature to make any official statement regarding facts that are yet to be confirmed.
This much is a matter of core principle at Columbia: The freedom to speak, to pursue ideas, and to hear and evaluate viewpoints totally objectionable to our own is an essential value of this university and, indeed, of our civil society. We defend the right to peaceful protest and expression of opposing views. But it is never acceptable for anyone to physically take to a stage and interrupt a speaker.
Our regulations are intended to help event organizers, participants and protestors maintain a safe environment for members of the University community and their guests to engage in meaningful and sometimes contentious debate across the spectrum of academic and political issues. We will continue to review the events of last evening to determine how that safe environment was violated and take appropriate measures to ensure it does not happen again."

To say that Columbia 'let' this or even wanted it is simply incorrect.
Sort of ironic that this is the same school who just punished one of its athletics clubs for using "inappropriate language" on a flyer. (Though if a feminist group had used the same term, there'd be no issue).
Bollinger being serious on this? Nah....
