One Day in the Life of Yale University

The October 30 edition of the Yale Daily News, which I found yesterday, provided some solid reading and insights into what's churning in undergrad minds these days. Even the ads are eye-catching, because they deal with academic rather than consumer-driven issues.

Some highlights:

-- on the front page you get the alarming headline "2 Teens Arrested Outside A&A," referring to the Art & Architecture building. The story says two teens, "who appeared to be around 13 years old," were arrested while loitering with a gun and a "large knife." Observe the exquisite dynamics at play in this quote from a student who observed the scene:

"The police said they told us what happened so we wouldn't think they were picking on kids."

But, but, the kids hadn't done anything!

-- "Slavery Complicates University's History," illustrated with a stained glass window in Calhoun College showing two slaves picking cotton. That's John C. Calhoun College for those not up on their pre-Civil War history. The article picks up on Brown University's recent report on its historical connections to slavery. The obvious analysis:

While Yale has no current plans to undertake a report similar to Brown's, some professors and student said they think the University should promote research on the issue.

-- "Colleges Discuss Admit Preference for Gays," also on the front page, getting the Yale reaction to a now-denied article in "Inside Higher Ed" alleging that Middlebury College "would implement affirmative action for gay applicants."

-- Inside, the op-ed page carries an editorial, "Honesty Must be the Basis for Slavery Dialogue," a sentiment that John C. Calhoun, Class of 1804, himself would no doubt share. Then the president of Yale College Democrats kicks in a column with the firebrand headline, "Democratic Congress Should be Top Priority."

-- I was pleasantly surprised by an ad for "Federal Career Week at Yale," which flagged opportunities in, among other services, defense and intelligence. The ad mentioned the National Security Education Program

-- An ad for "Current Challenges in Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Arms Control," a conversation with Mohamed ElBaradei, 2005 Nobel Peace Prize winner and director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

-- An ad for "The United Nations in the 21st Century: The Challenge of Managing Global Change," by Mark Malloch Brown, deputy secretary-general of the UN.

-- "Alum Talks Mass Imprisonment," about Jeremy Travis '70, speaking at a Master's Tea about "the negative effects of mass incarceration, as well as racial discrepencies on today's legal system." Travis is the president of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

-- An ad for a speech by Arthur Green, Irving Brudnick Professor of Jewish Theology and Mysticism at Hebrew College, part of the Franz Rosenzweig Lectures.

-- An ad for an appearance by Kevin O'Leary, author of "Saving Democracy: A Plan for Real Representation in America." Kesher Talkers might like this one, as the blurb says,

"O'Leary's bold plan makes political deliberation far more inclusive and representative than it is today by pairing the Internet with a new kind of town hall meeting."

That plan sounds promising, since it of course would include among its netizens readers of Little Green Footballs, Free Republic, Power Line Blog, Jihad Watch, Gateway Pundit and Instapundit. With any luck, maybe Yale can get those 13-year old gunmen involved to teach them the value of inclusive political deliberation. Put down your guns and pick up your mouse, boys!
