Shabbat: Ribbons, pearls, golden flags
I am going to do a Shabbat music post every Friday. You will be able to find them all here, along with other holidays that are neither chagim nor yamim noraim. Here's the Klezmatics with Joshua Nelson, singing "Shnirele, Perele" live. It starts slow and builds. (Nelson comes in halfway through with verses from Ani Ma'amin.) Play it loud.
This version is from the concert in Berlin that forms their recent CD Brother Moses Smote the Water. Shabbat, especially havdalah, is a good time to think about the Messianic Age.
"Shnirele, Perele", Yiddish:
Ribbons, pearls, golden flags
the Messiah, son of David, is above us
he holds a goblet in his right hand
and gives his blessing to the whole earth.
Amen, amen, this is the truth
the Messiah will come this year.
If he comes by riding, good years are ahead.
If he comes by horse, new times are ahead.
If he comes by foot, every Jew will be settled in Eretz Yisroyl.
"Ani Ma'amin," Hebrew:
I believe with a complete belief
In the coming of the Messiah
And even though he may tarry
I will wait for him, whenever he comes

Judith, I noticed Seraphic Secret's link to this post. It's so uncanny that you posted this today. I'd been looking through the YOUTUBE archives today for something to post in honor of Shabbos. I typed in Klezmer and came across the concert, watched a few minutes, debating whether to post it. (after all, I am a Perele!)
Well, I lost the debate and instead chose to post Itzhak Perlman playing the theme from Schindler's List.
Good Shabbos to you. (it starts here in Toronto in about 16 minutes.)

Great idea, Pearll - two different music posts are better than one!
