Sukkot 1: Pri Eytz Hadar

All Yamim Noraim posts here, including one post a day from Rosh Chodesh Ellul 5766 through Yom Kippur 5767. All chagim posts here, including one post a day from the first day of Sukkot through Simchat Torah 5767. (Each of these include a mp3 of Jewish music from a wide variety of sources and genres.)

Last year I wrote about my trip to the corner of Essex and Canal to buy the arba minim the day before Sukkot. I talked about how Sukkot is the weirdest Jewish holiday, its connection with Christianity, the schmoozing I did while picking over the etrogim, the particularities of choosing one's etrog (or perhaps the etrog chooses you, like that puppy at the pound you ended up taking home), and sectarian co-existence on the Upper West Side. Great comments by Barefoot Jewess and Sultan Knish (whom I must meet sometime). (In other words, you would enjoy that post.)

Yesterday I went back to Essex and Canal. . . . .

It was a sweet sunny October day, the same smooth-talking chassid sold me my set. I picked out another golden yellow small narrow bumpy etrog with a groove for my finger. It was a weekday afternoon and the street was pretty empty, unlike the scene in Crown Heights. But I did run into someone I know, in fact, someone I saw at shul every few weeks since I came to NYC.

Last year I remember a few Chinese stopping to ask what we were selling and why (the corner is where their neighborhood overlaps the old Jewish neighborhood). Same thing this year. I found out the Chinese Autumn Moon Festival also starts today. (The harvest moon is very late this year.) The Chinese woman who asked me about the etrogs said they looked like the fruit she eats at the moon festival, a larger yellow citrus called a pomelo. I explained that etrogs are too bitter to eat but people make jelly and candied peel from them.

I bought mine from that same chassid, it was raining by then and the esrog box won't close but everything else is fine. The price of waiting to the last minute
