Sukkot 1: Ashrei Shabbat
All Yamim Noraim posts here, including one post a day from Rosh Chodesh Ellul 5766 through Yom Kippur 5767. All chagim posts here, including one post a day from the first day of Sukkot through Simchat Torah 5767. (Each of these include a mp3 of Jewish music from a wide variety of sources and genres.)
I can't think of any Sukkot-specific songs, but we do sing Hallel for nine days straight, and we are commanded to be happy - no ifs, ands or buts. I have a lot of Hallel melodies to share with you, but let's start with the definition of "Happy": Ashrei. We are supposed to recite Ashrei three times a day, which is more often than we are supposed to recite the Sh'ma. (Are gratitude and joy more crucial to remind ourselves of than declarations of unity?)
Richard Kaplan sets the Sukkot mood with his piano-accompanied "Ashrey"
from his second CD Life of the Worlds. (The liner notes explain the origins of all the melodies in this tour de force, but I am not going to transcribe it, so buy the CD, it's great.)
Like Rosh Hashanah this year, Sukkot starts on Shabbat. I have so much great Shabbat music (including five! versions of "Ki Eshmera Shabbat" and seven! "Yah Ribon"s), but let's keep this an all-Richard-Kaplan post with Yigdal.
a duet with Michael Zeigler, set to a Moroccan melody, from their CD Tuning the Soul.
"Rabbi Eliezer said, A man is obliged to eat fourteen meals in the sukkah (during the seven days of the festival). One on each day and one on each night. The sages however say, there is no fixed number except on the first night of the festival alone (when one must eat a meal in the sukkah). R. Eliezer said in addition, If a man did not eat in the sukkah on the first night of the festival, he may make up for it on the last night of the festival." (Sukkah 2.6)Unfortunately our first cold front of the fall blew in today and I am going to wimp out for tonight, but I have a dinner scheduled for Shemini Atzeret, and many in between. Hag Sameach, everyone.
