About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Carter on the Jews

In an intriguing article on Jimmy Carter, we learn some more details about Carter's early political history with Jewish Democrats during his Presidential run and his Presidency, including this gem.

In Dangerous Liaison: The Inside Story of the U.S.-Israeli Covert Relationship, Andrew and Leslie Cockburn revealed that during a March 1980 meeting with his senior political advisers, Carter, discussing his fading reelection prospects and his sinking approval rating in the Jewish community, snapped, “If I get back in, I’m going to [expletive] the Jews.”
And he's been working hard at this goal ever since.

People often betray their ignorance with their words - even Presidents - sad to say.

Better watch out when Jimmy Carter starts talking tough...

Well, actually, you don't have to watch out at all. I think most people will agree that he was the wussiest president ever. Remember the famous attack rabbit?

Then there was the hemorrhoid problem that left him "almost completely incapacitated from participating in any kind of public events" If he starts causing trouble, hide his Preparation H.

The only difference between Carter and the current Dem agenda is that Carter lacked and lacks subtlety

I don't know how much I trust the Cockburn's. They're like Seymour Hersh. I think.

What a liar! He said "if I get back in," and he didn't, but he went on try to expletive us, anyway. (As if he didn't do it often enough during his miserable four years in office.)

The irony is that we always hear the lie about the anti-semitic religious right but never the anti-semitic religious left personified by Jimmy Carter and Jesse Jackson.

Rob,

This is because what you hear is brought to you by the same community that can somehow conclude that the Republicans are the "religious" party even though it is the Democrats, and not the Republicans, that run presidential candidates with the title "Reverend".

I have absolutely nothing against that, but to do so, and then somehow express concern that the other party is too close to religious instutions is truly bizarre- how many times have heard that Bush thinks he is inspired by God? Like we wouldn't get this and more from a President Reverend?

Ben,

Remember when President Clinton used to attend Church religiously during the Monica Lewinsky imbroglio and leave, clutching a bible in his hand -also religiously - for his photo ops.

May God bless and keep Jimmy Carter -- far away from us.
