About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Let us now praise weird snacks

Fairway, the gourmet supermarket of the Upper West Side, is now carrying dried gooseberries again. I used to buy them whenever I shopped there (although they are expensive), and then they stopped carrying them. They look like large raisins, but orange. They are very tart, sort of a cross between lemon and orange flavor. I don't know why I find them so addictive, but I do.

Another Fairway item I can't get enough of are chili-lime flavored dried mango chips.

I think Trader Joe's regularly carries chili-lime mango chips and probably gooseberries too (why not, they have every other weird food item?!). Do they have Trader Joe's in New York?

One just opened last year but I haven't been down there yet.

There is a Russian short story of cold satisfaction in riches gained from dead wives called 'Gooseberries' (though 'Kerry' might be the more hip title translation). It really is a place and mood evocative story. Might Chekhov be the author?
