My Interim Proposal To Save Iraq
Get rid of Maliki and install Vladimir Putin, with a cohort of his ex-KGB
officers, to get Iraq under control.
He's become the anti-Bush. Everyone takes his threats very seriously indeed.
All we'd need still is an exit strategy to get him out after he had the country quelled.

I think I would rather ship Putin to Mexico and let him get that under control.

I would be inclined to agree with you except the Chechen situation sort of contradicts your point. Even a old school brutal despot like Putin is powerless after Beslen and other atrocities. However he is very good against journalists and businessmen.

Well the Chechen situation arose before he started poisoning all opposition while simultaneously complaining to the British Government about publicizing Litvinenko's charges.
Beslan was a terrible tragedy. Though, since then I have read very little about new Chechen initiatives - perhaps they merely aren't covered here, or perhaps whatever is going on is at a much more muted level. So that, in the latter case at least, Putin seems to be succeeding at quelling the Chechens.
If anyone knows better, please correct.
