"The first film that takes you to the dark side of the environmental movement."
That headline comes from the voice-over from the website for the film "Mine Your Own Business," a documentary by Irish filmmakers Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney.
I learned about the film and McAleer through a newspaper piece he wrote last month that was very striking. He wrote:
As a liberal European journalist my heart has always automatically sympathized with the small community groups and environmentalists who were campaigning against governments or large corporations that were "destroying the environment" in remote locations. But then I was lucky enough to have to go and live in one of those remote locations -- and found the story being spun by environmentalists was often wrong, distorted by looking at the world through the lens of an ideology that would condemn millions to grinding poverty.
McAleer is a liberal-hawkish subversive who, according to the film's website, "is a Fellow of the Moving Picture Institute, a not for profit dedicated to advancing liberty through the medium of film (thempi.org)."
MPI is based in New York and has some fascinating films in its catalog, including "Freedom's Fury" about the 1956 Hungarian uprisinig and "Hammer & Tickle," about humor in the Soviet Union and its satellite states.
Better see these films before the new Congress bans them for being offensive, intolerant and harmful to protected species.
