The Southern Front: Kidnappings in the Rio Grande Valley
If I still lived here, I'd be concerned. The drug-gang violence that permeates Mexico is creeping across the border, per this article from the McAllen Monitor
FBI agents cautioned that so far innocent bystanders in the Valley have not been caught in the crossfire. But increased cooperation between the FBI and local law enforcement seem to be a sure sign that the violence in the Valley has become more organized because of ties to drug gangs."We don’t know if it’s moving south," said FBI spokesman Jorge Cisneros. "We have seen some of these cases lately that have concerned us here in the Valley.":
The tide is coming in from across the Rio Grande -- how high will it move up the beach? I don't see much to stop it.

A great ally of the U.S. is President Alvaro Uribe de Velez of Columbia. The Economist was discussing Columbia and it's problems with the drug trade recently and Uribe was quoted as saying that 'they haven't had the kind of success that might have been expected from all their effort.' This is a subtle way perhaps to say that demand from the US has made their task very difficult. Lt. Gov Dewhurst in Texas has proposed testing for androgens in schools; maybe this is a precursor to other demand side reduction. The 'illegal' drug use of the boss, the U.S., creates problems for other societies which may come back here.
