John Bolton Resigns
His resignation effective at the end of his recess appointment.
I just saw Eleanor Cliff - all happy - say that despite his effectiveness, Bolton reminds people of Rumsfeld and his regime. So that by accepting this resignation, Bush is showing he is in touch with reality.
Huh?
I think Eleanor Cliff is the one who is not in touch with reality.
UPDATE:
President Bush, in a statement, said he was "deeply disappointed that a handful of United States senators prevented Ambassador Bolton from receiving the up or down vote he deserved in the Senate.""They chose to obstruct his confirmation, even though he enjoys majority support in the Senate, and even though their tactics will disrupt our diplomatic work at a sensitive and important time," Bush said. "This stubborn obstructionism ill serves our country, and discourages men and women of talent from serving their nation."
Allah reminds us of the video clip of Lou Dobb's tribute to John Bolton as a superlative UN ambassador.
At the Corner, Andrew McCarthy adds:
If John Bolton could not be confirmed after the job he did, there is no hope for a strong American presence there. More importantly, even with Bolton performing heroically, the UN was still a menace. Why are we so hot to preserve this international racketeering enterprise? What's in it for us?
Please, someone explain the upside that outweighs the downside such that we should be agonizing over a quality replacement rather than using that energy to marginalize the UN, consider a replacement organization, or — better — rely on other international alliances and ad hoc coalitions to address international problems.
Heh, can you imagine the liberal reaction if Bush tried to disinvest from the UN now?
Because, you know, they support the UN and all of its works.
UPDATE II: According to Drudge, George Mitchell is on the short list of replacements. I'm fine with that, as long as he stays on the list.
UPDATE III: Bush makes his displeasure about the senatorial tactics known. Hot Air has the vid.

I think that GWB is backtracking fast !

what clift means is that bolton like rumsfeld reminded her of a brief unfortunate period in american history when america dealt from a position of strenght and believed self-defense justified military action and didn't apologize for either of those

I don't this is a question of GWB backtracking. It's a question of Lincoln Chaffee refusing to vote to send Bolton out of committee to the up and down vote in the Senate he would surely win.
There's nothing much Bush can do about that - the rules specify that Bolton can be reappointed to a second recess app't, but not paid for the job he is doing.

I love the way that for you guys the BBC are a bunch of incorrigible liars with zero credibility whenever they report on Israeli troops killing civilians (or on anything else to do with Israel, Palestine or Lebanon) but when they have a report critical of the UN suddenly they're your news source of choice.
If I weren't still finishing my celebratory bottle of wine for the removal of the worthless Bolton I might even care. Best news since Rumsfeld was binned. Hearing it on the car radio caused me to cheer out loud.

Snort, Rob. If even the BBC reports on trouble with the UN, you know it has to be true, given their uncritical pro UN agenda. It's that simple. Also, I had it open at the time, so I didn't have to go around hunting for URLs.
