Saddam in Jerusalem

I stopped by this coffee shop in the Old City for a cup of that hot sweet spiced milk, and the news about Saddam was on the TV. I asked if they had executed him and the vendor nodded. I said good for them. He didn't say anything.

Alcibiades adds: This BBC opening paragraph perfectly captures the mood that Judith recounted above.

Although the news of Saddam Hussein's execution was widely anticipated in the region, it has been greeted with a mixture of surprise and anger in some quarters - and notable silence in others.

Judith adds: To be fair, this was one small clump of coffee drinkers on a street dividing the Christian and Muslim quarters. And I only asked the one guy. If I were a journalist I would ask questions instead of venturing an opinion, but I was in tourist mode. But the mood was somber, like it was very early morning and everyone wasn't quite awake yet. But it was 2 PM. I do think in some quarters there would an atmosphere of happiness or excitability or at least animated talking. Here people were ignoring the TV and looking cranky.

I tried to get a shot of the TV with Saddam on it but I kept missing that moment and they were not happy with me photographing them and it was a narrow covered alley - the photo you see is from me literally backed up against the opposite wall using the widest angle on my camera. So I couldn't be discreet.

I missed a great opportunity to walk up and down the alley asking all the vendors what they thought. It would also have been interesting to buy a kaffiyeh, put it on, act like a ISM volunteer and then hear what they would say.

I am a new acolyte in the Zombietime/Even Coyne Maloney school.....

But the Zionists were dancing in the streets, no doubt!

"Who's that woman under the bulldozer?"
