Saddam's Long Black Veil Moment
What was going through Saddam Hussein's head as the noose went around his neck, when "the scaffold is high and eternity's near," in the words of the awesome song "Long Black Veil." I read several stories about the execution, such as this one in the Washington Post and had a hard time coming up with a theme. Some possibilities.
"Damn those US soldiers for convincing me to chip into the Super Bowl pool! Now I'll never collect."
"At least Gerald Ford is still alive."
"Isn't this the point where Susan Sarandon bursts through the door with a reprieve from the governor?"
"All those years of contributing to my 401-K, and I'll never be able to enjoy my retirement."
"I hope the New York Times obituary mentions my respect for diversity, national healthcare policies, concern for global warming, and opposition to the policies of George Bush. I told Pinch that's what I wanted to remembered for -- the good times."
"I should have spent more time at the office."
Any other suggestions?

Your link is a bit misleading -- Cash was neither the composer nor the first performer (that was Lefty Frizzell). And there's an even more appropriate Cash song for Saddam: "Twenty-Five Minutes to Go".

I'm too old for 72 virgins, maybe 36 will do.
Don't put that hood over my head I want to see this too.

Should we perhaps have another competition, for what thoughts are going through Ariel Sharon's head as - today - he enters his second year in a coma?
Sorry, I forgot: tasteless humour directed at dead Muslims is reasonable comment, while tasteless humour directed at half-dead Jews is anti-Semitic fascism. Oops.
FWIW, I suspect the thoughts going through Sharon's head are despair at the screw-up Olmert is making of his country, but that's just my opinion. Well, not just mine.
I take no pleasure in Sharon's condition, and hope he isn't suffering. Nor do I take any in Saddam's deeply unsatisfactory trial or the way in which his execution was handled. In every respect Israel showed how these things should be done when it put Eichmann on trial. A trial so scrupulous in its fairness it was almost surreal, and a dignified low-key execution and cremation. Compare and contrast.
