About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

The Jew Bushinsky and All His Works

One formula for dealing with anti-semitism.

Sasha Baron Cohen makes use of another one in Borat - satire.

Perhaps it is not a surprise, though, that the mindset revealed in the two situations is actually quite similar, considering where "Kazakhstan" has its origin.

Which do you think is a more effective method for dealing with anti-semitism - playing along and taking control or satire?

Yair Lapid's response in the article is exactly the same as "Borat's"--and equally useless.

What is the purpose of engaging in "satire" which confirms and inflames antisemitic prejudice? It may give the satirist an inner snigger as he pokes fun at the prejudices been tossed at him, but that's it.

Granted that there is little likelihood confronting or denying the ridiculous accusations will do any good, since antisemitic prejudice is proof against mere fact or logic. Still, it seems at best silly, and at worst self-destructive, to respond in a way which will permit the bigot to run breathlessly back to his or her friends with the news that a real, live, breathing Jew just confirmed everything they believed all along.

Myself, I prefer to go on the attack, if possible. A number of years ago an until-that-moment friend of several years suddenly erupted in a nasty little antisemitic diatribe. It was not difficult to rip his points to shreds; his ignorance of Judaism was only exceeded by his ignorance of history. Finally, he demanded to know why Jews don't let anyone convert. After explaining that welcoming converts is not the same as discouraging proselytization, I explained to him: "If you could feel a personal connection to the Exodus, you could convert to Judaism. If I, on the other hand, could look at Communion (he was a recently born-again Catholic) and see anything other than ritual cannibalism, I could convert to Christianity." That got to him.

Of course, it didn't change his mind in any way, but it would be foolish to expect that. All I wanted to do was put him on the receiving end of the kind of crap he thought it was OK to throw at other people. Most such people are bullies, and most bullies are cowards; they will quickly back down if they are challenged with confidence. As it says in Ki Savo, "they shall come out against you one way, and shall flee before you seven ways."

If you could put up with any open meetings this would be the best disinfectant. Are you afraid of the Methodist Church in Galesburg, IL? No. Why? In part because on the sign outside it says, 'Fear No Evil. Sunday 9 AM. All Welcome.' Something simple like, during Passover, 'Christian Child sacrifced 9 PM. All Welome' would do; who knows you might meet some (?)like minded Muslims.
