'24' Goes Mel Gibson
The two-hour kick-off of '24' comes soon, and I want to see how far the show goes with its depictions of the ravaged body and soul of Yaacov "Jack" Bauer, the Jewish terrorist-fighter kidnapped by the Chinese at the end of last season.
Fox's endless loop of teasers shows Bauer initially looking like a Bowery bum, then flashes a view of torture marks on his back. Preview articles say Bauer's got some psychological issues, too.
So I wonder: Did Mel Gibson get to direct some episodes?
With his Jesus and Mayan celebrations of torture and bloodshed, GIbson redefined the art-house possibilities of splatter movies, beyond anything seen in "A Nightmare on Elm Street." So Gibson would feel comfortable at 24, working with characters who get banged around constantly and even execute their office mates, but ultimately wield the fiery sword of American wrath and righteousness (I was going to say "Christian wrath and righteousness," but since Bauer is Jewish that's not a very kosher thing to say).
In Gibson, 24 would find a dream director, somebody with a knack for all-out action, patriotism, and sado-masochistic blood-letting who would match Jack Bauer smack for smack. And there would be a spiritual kinship between director and character; in past seasons, Bauer has suffered about on the level of the main character of "The Passion of the Christ," including being killed and brought back to life. He hasn't distributed loaves and fishes yet, but I expect him to pull off that trick at a CTU holiday party. Mel and Jack would be the hottest duo since Peter and Paul. OK, since Martin and Lewis. Not buying it? What about since Britney and Paris?
Do it, Fox. Get Mel. He could use the work.
