About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Giuliani for 2008

Long-time readers of this blog know that I am a big Rudy Giuliani fan. Now that he has officially thrown his hat into the ring, I will be doing my best to convince the GOP to nominate him and Americans to vote for him. (If along the way I change my mind, I'll blog about it and urge everyone to support someone else.)

I don't speak for any of my co-bloggers and I have no idea who they think should be elected in 2008. I hope they use our blog to advocate for their favorite candidates, and maybe we will have some interesting debates about the campaign. I also invite our readers to weigh in.

If you want to help the Giuliani effort, here's a good place to start.

I am looking for his wonderful 2004 RNC speech on video, but in the meantime here's the transcript. (Here you go: Real Player stream. Webpage for the stream. It's either a bit or a lot dated, depending on how you think the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns are going, but overall it shows his charisma and clarity on the issues. It also reminds us what a big tent the Republican Party was in 2004.)

PS And his wife is Jewish! (I know he had an ugly divorce and didn't handle himself very well, but he seems to be genuinely happy with Judith Nathan, and that's not a dealbreaker for me.)

UPDATE: Even anti-abortion hardliner Kathryn Lopez is softening a bit.

» Giuliani is the seed crystal from Kesher Talk

Hillary vs. Rudy
Sounds like a subway series.

Rudy in 2008!!!!!!!!!
He needs a Cheney-like running mate to keep the conservative right happy.

Hillary Clinton is the most over-rated politician in modern US history.
At least her husband could fake sincerity.

We need Rudy now!

I just signed up! Thanks for the link to the Giuliani effort

mary | January 30, 2007 05:33 PM

I just signed up, too. Go, Rudy!!

I despised him when he was U.S. Attorney for the way he handled prosecutions, including the infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei" incident.

But even I am softening, because the global war is the number one issue. I'd just like to see him work with social conservatives, at least to reach an understanding of some kind. I'm not really a card-carrying social conservative, but we daven at the same shul. And judges are a big, big issue with me, too.

Giuliani is someone whom I can vote for in the presidential election !

Rob said, "Hillary Clinton is the most over-rated politician in modern US history."

Well, maybe second. To Giuliani.

I just do not "get" the Giuliani craze in some quarters. I mean, sure, I would love to see the GOP nominate someone that far to the left of the party median. It won't happen, but if it did, it would probably lead to the break up of that party as we know it. And that would be a great thing for all the rest of us.

Would Americans elect Giuliani if he got the nomination somehow? I doubt it. I suspect people are at last tired of politicians whose only claim to "leadership" is having been in the right place on 9/11.

(Doesn't anyone remember how he self-destructed in his last campaign against Hillary? Doesn't Giuliani deserve considerable scrutiny over his pre-9/11, but post WTC bombing, "leadership"?)

Zed, read this and this.

Judith Weiss | January 31, 2007 05:37 PM

Hey Zed.
You don't know what your talking about.
Rudy is a hero not for the single day of 9/11/01 but for what he did in New York City everyday for the seven years prior to 9/11/01.

9/11 simply highlighted the hidden substance of this man that he earned. His policy for the city (the the left still hates him for) saved thousands of lives.

I give the american people enough credit to see substance over Clintonian hype

He will make a great president.

Rob | February 1, 2007 05:57 PM

Um, I don't get it.

I watched the video but it was from an interview after the SOTU speech (I think). Anyway, he doesn't announce anything, does he?

I also scanned Google News for an update but as of 1pm CST I didn't see anything indicating that Rudy has, in fact, "thrown his hat into the ring."

In fact, AM New York says this:

The ex-mayor still is holding back from submitting the simple one-page form declaring himself a possible candidate, despite raising $1.4 million to run. And asked what party he belongs to on a different form, Giuliani didn't say - he left the answer blank.

Yes, he has a site, but (so far) no declaration of intent.

What gives? Am I missing something here?

Ara Rubyan [TypeKey Profile Page] | February 2, 2007 02:17 PM

He has been campaigning in several key cities and building a campaign staff and volunteer outlet and raising money. On the TV spot he talks about what it's been like to campaign, and talks about being the early front-runner and whether that will hurt him later.

Maybe he'll decide to quit, but since he is getting huge approval ratings, why would he quit at this point? Looks to me like he's running.
