About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Krav Maga: Not Competition, But Survival

I had my first Krav Maga class tonight, a 10-week course I'm taking through Stamford Continuing Ed. Taught at the Breakthru fitness center, the class consisted mostly of pairs of students taking turns whomping on each other as one team member held some type of pad. Kicks, punches, elbow throws and more were part of the mix.

Hours later, I can still feel my heart pounding (and not just from tonight's go-nuclear episode of '24'). Krav Maga really got me pumped, more than anything I do at the local JCC, as much as I like it. The instructors teach the simple philosophy behind Krav Maga: it's not about points or competitions, but survival. Others can find their calm spiritual center, but Krav Maga gets you out of the threat.

Have any other KTers done Krav Maga? What's your experience? I can't wait until next Monday.

I do Krav Maga, have been doing it on and off for 3 years now. It's quite good as martial arts go - you get to learn a lot of different stuff: kicks, punches, blocks, arm locks, you name it.

Some kind of groin protection is a must. :)

The only thing I know about Krav Maga is that it is supposed to be "Jewish Karate" (there is a good joke there somewhere). Sounds like an interesting workout. I hope it catches on.

I have an orange belt in krav mega; I've taken a two year hiatus however and I really need to get back to it.

It actually translates more or less as hand to hand combat.

Not as aesthetically satisfying as watching Yehoshua Sofer literally dancing his opponents onto the ground, but looks as though it works, which is the main thing. Good luck, and try not to have a heart attack!
