About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

A report from "End Israel Apartheid Week"

[ Welcome LGF readers! I'm enjoying your comment thread. If you go to the Monday event and you don't have a blog, email a report to me and I'll post it. - Judith ]

Part two.
Part three.
Part four.
Part five.

Yesterday evening kicked off End Israeli Apartheid Week in NYC, part of this year's nation-wide effort by anti-Zionists to install the "Israel is a racist apartheid state" meme into the mental plumbing of as many people as possible. (The next event is tomorrow (Monday) at Judson Memorial Church, if you want to check it out. And you can witness the last gasp of the divestment movement at the same venue on Thursday. More on divestment at an Episcopal church (natch!) on Friday with mediocre Columbia professor Joseph Massad and virulent Chomsky protege professor Tanya Reinhardt. And oh joy! A teach-in in Jersey City.)

Kesher Talk friend Pamela Hall was there with others from the David Project. (Pamela's previous report was from an event sponsored by Rabbis for Human Rights):

We were there as were a bunch from The David Project. PLUS Ms. Charlotte (very scary Marxist) Kates.

It was a tedium. A really boring BORING 3 hours. Two speakers whose accents were so thick mostly what I heard was and in 1967....1967....the four days in 1967...yadaydadyada. The settlers (instead of the Israelis) and the history of why the Holy Land is Arabic. Saw o Mosque of Abraham and then we were reminded that Abraham is THEIR holy father (as the room had a good laugh at the expense of those nasty Jews who think Abraham is THEIR father). The Holy Land belongs to palis. They've been there since...couldn't understand her, but we all know what she's claiming....

Showed the maltreatment of holy ruins by the settlers ...Israelis... (that was rich) by showing the foundation of a modern building build over a ruin. Wasn't touching the ruin. It was still there...whatever... The history time-line that shows the land has always belonged Palis includes...Hebron ...it's is an Arabic word so I guess that's 'proof'.

[Judith: It seems to be one of many Hebrew/Arabic cognates. But if they say the city has always "belonged to Palestinians," that's of a piece with the egregious historical revisionism they are pedaling. Well, "revisionism" doesn't really describe it, it's baldfaced replacement theology.]

Had to stare at a map of Israel where everything was in Arabic accept Hebron. Had to watch a propaganda film that NEVER ENDED. Saw all those nasty children of those nasty, violent settlers tormenting those sweet Pali children with kicks and STONES when all these Pali kids wanted was to go to school. They just want to live free of the occupation. Saw those buffoons called Israeli soldirs tearing down olive trees to build that Apartheid wall and the propaganda-style subtitles enhanced what foolish people these settlers and their soldiers are.

[Judith: See, I know Jewish and Palestinian residents have committed violence upon each other. I'm not even going to contest the content of their films, other than to note that they only show one side. But if they lead off with revisionist history, I then don't care to find out what Jews did to Palestinians. you're going to lie about our history, then fuck you, I don't want to know. Someone who thinks Jews have a right to live in one of our oldest habitations can inform me about abuses by settlers, and I'll listen.]

Our people got a few questions on the floor. They were never answered OR they were shouted down by their ringers in the room as : THAT's NOT A QUESTION.

Then there would be so much noise of people shouting they would move on to the next question. On young Jewish male was actually hurt by the Hunter Security when his question was used to create an uproar Then security roughed HIM up and dragged him from the room. He was respectful and was not the one shouting. I hear we will all be called on by our side to give a report that he was injured by the security.

A collection was taken from the crowd of 55 to 60 and that was revealing. Now we knew who WE were in the room cause you KNOW we put NOTHING in 'the plate'. This bunch is working the message: Palis good, settlers BAD, it's their land; settlers mean, settlers soldiers buffoons, etc, etc, etc...

What a crock. Tell me what would happen if any one of these dried up old hippies, under the spell of dark olive eyes and red, green, and black flags would do when they got off a plane in Tel Aviv, and realized that Israel is much more than "settlers" in the "west bank". Then what would they start demonizing? The 90-year old ladies from Poland? The charming Yemenite farmers? The amazing advances of technology? The amazing advances of academia, government, military? What aspect of Israel will they tear at next?

Abe | February 11, 2007 11:08 PM

Abe, what the ISM minions do is go straight from the airport to Gaza or the West Bank. They do not pass Go, they do not collect $200, they do not hang out with average Israelis. Maybe they hang out with ultra-lefty Israelis, maybe. But mostly they avoid Israel. Israelis have cooties, ya know.

Judith | February 11, 2007 11:14 PM

Israel is a racist apartheid state?

What are these hippies and ISM terrorist wannabes smoking?

Chevra | February 12, 2007 03:18 AM

By granting legitimacy to the kinds of anti-zionists that want to "wipe Israel off the map" or beat an 80 year-old old Auschwitz survivor in an elevator, these "fools" are helping to set the stage for a second holocaust.

Shmuel | February 12, 2007 06:25 AM

It would be very nice if it were possible to read a commentary without encountering a vulgarity. I see no reason in this post for using the f-word. I expect offensive behavior from the anti-semites, not from our side. Let's show the haters what reason looks like, by expressing it not only in our logic, but in our choice of words.

David Becker | February 12, 2007 06:44 AM

The event is a bit strident, but the comparison is that far off when you restrict your focus to just the occupied territories.

Chevra wrote: "By granting legitimacy to the kinds of anti-zionists that want to 'wipe Israel off the map' or beat an 80 year-old old Auschwitz survivor in an elevator, these 'fools' are helping to set the stage for a second holocaust."

Chevra, your being over the top and quite unfair. Anti-zionists are a diverse bunch. Some just want a binational solution, a democratic state where they are equal rights. While some are scared of it thinking it is slow death, the more recent credible demographic studies say that Jews are likely to remain a majority for the seeable future. They do not hang out with psychotic Holocaust deniers as you imply above. You are not seeing things with precision, but making gross emotional statements.

Ben | February 12, 2007 11:01 AM

i view you with a sense of awe inasmuch as you were able to actually sit thru the entire 3+ hours without suffering any apparent long term ill effects...i may have simply killed myself to avoid the pain...

ric ottaiano | February 12, 2007 11:13 AM

"Some just want a binational solution, a democratic state where they are equal rights."

Just a binational "solution"?

It is no solution at all. It would result very quickly in a Jewish minority who then be at the mercy of an Islamofascist majority who would visit on them all those evils we are all very well aware of. Furthermore, there are virtually no Jewish Israelis from either the left or the right who would go along with it.

Israel is a democratic state. It is the only state in the Middle East where Arabs enjoy full democratic rights. There are Arab doctors, lawyers, members of parliament, supreme court justices, teachers, architects and nurses.

There is in fact no difference between an anti-Semite who praised Hitler and machine-gunned Jewish women and children into pits and those who would destroy Israel by force of arms or through promoting a so-called "binational state". Both are profoundly evil.

Joshua | February 12, 2007 12:11 PM

Well, I wouldn't say profoundly evil. I like to reserve descriptions like that for people like Saddam Hussein and Yassir Arafat. But I would say either willfully ignorant or narcissistically smug or deliberately malicious.

Judith | February 12, 2007 05:38 PM

"Well, I wouldn't say profoundly evil."

Would an individual not be profoundly evil who worked for the destruction of the United States? How much more evil then are the individuals who work for the destruction of the Jewish refuge, a refuge which exists because millions of our brothers and sisters were murdered in cold blood and many hundreds of thousands were ethnically cleansed by the Arab nations.

Ignorant or smug doesn't work here. These people know exactly what they are doing. Just like those who worked for the Nazis on the Final Solution in fact.

Joshua | February 12, 2007 05:50 PM

I went on Monday nigh and heard the same racist lies that have been peddled by the attackers for decades. The question and answer session was short and somewhat selective. One of the speakers said "if we push hard enough and for a long time" eventually 'we' will defeat Israel. But when questioned about institutionalized racism in Palestinian schools (the root of terrorism) ALL of the speakers on the panel dodged the question and attempted to turn it around on Israeli schools or Israeli society.

Ironically another speaker, Saree Makdisi, said "you cannot continue to tell the people something and just expect them to believe it's true because you say so". I laughed out loud when I heard him say this, since that is EXACTLY WHAT HE DOES ! Saree tells the same falsehoods whether about Hezbollah's use of civilian shields or accusations that Israel is not a Democracy.

The same people supporting Hezbollah this summer were organizing this event! See the video at YouTube:

It's absurd to apply the term apartheid to one of the most progressive states in the world,

Yes, with no idea whatsoever, in their dream world, of the zero sum game being played while at the same time inciting others to violence.
Israel is a democratic state. The Palestinian areas under the control of the Arab League through its thugs has been the despotic mess that it has been from the time of Jordanian and Egyptian rule through to the present day. The Israelis gave up Gaza completely and we know the result of a year with Fatah and Hamas having free reign.

Cynic [TypeKey Profile Page] | February 13, 2007 10:39 AM

SAREE MAKDISI IS A LIAR

Saree Makdisi was one of the speakers at the racist event Monday night and is a compulsive liar when it comes to anything related to Israel and Palestine. Last night he claimed that "a secret" Israeli policy keeps Jerusalem's Jewish population at 72% and Arab population at 28%. Yet when I took a look at wikipedia the Jewish population was only 68% of Jerusalem, that makes Saree a bonafide LIAR!

There was so much hatred and racism emanating from the stage that I thought the 4 speakers were going to spontaneously combust
