More on Abir - the Ancient Jewish Martial Art Form
If anyone was interested in the topic of the original post on Abir - the Ancient Jewish Martial Art form - now undergoing a renaissance, from the beginning of January, but hasn't looked at it in a while since it's way off the front page, it's worth another look now.
We've since had a commentator currently studying under the Abir Aluf and deputized to speak for him, provide us with a wealth of information about the origins of the ancient sport and other fascinating historical details about Habbani Jew - Jews from Yemen. This includes a few details about Yehoshua Sofer's family, traditions about which date back as far as the end of the Bar Kochba war. Which, for those of you not up on your Jewish history, is 135 CE. (Though apparently a recent ceremonial arc excavated at Be'it Shean indicates that the rebellion continued in the Galilee until 136.) Fascinating stuff.
At the end of this war, for which the Romans had to import their pre-eminent general, Julius Severus, stationed at the time in Britain, as well as deploying four legions, cohorts from another three Legions and seventeen auxiliary units, the Romans made the land uninhabitable for a large population of Jews by sowing it with salt. Circumcision was forbidden by the Romans, as was the teaching of Jewish law, which event soon led to the publishing of the Mishnah - the oral law written down for the first time, for fear that the law against teaching Torah would lead to the forgetting of the Torah and all legal tradition in its wake. And Hadrian erected a Temple to Jupiter on Temple Mount, with a statue of himself on top of the Holy of Holies.
Speaking of the Bar Kochba war, Rabbi Lazar Brody, who by the bye, first brought Abir to my attention with his posts, recently also made a post with a video about meditating near a cave used by some of Bar Kochba's warrior's while escaping Romans.
