Where are the UNICEF donors of the Middle East?

Occasional Kesher Talk correspondent "Ben" (not to be confused with occasional Kesher Talk blogger Ben Kerstein):

Periodically, I get mail from UNICEF, generally asking me for money while telling me of the good they are doing, and how so many kids around the world have no medicine, food, water, clothes, etc. This is because I used to be a donor, and although they haven't seen a check from me in three years, they assume it's because of some simple oversight on my part and not any of the issues I brought up to them in a letter three years ago - none of which have been addressed, of course.

Lesson: Never expect any large charity, no matter how noble, to take the concerns of donors seriously. We are just money-piƱatas to them, hit us enough, and money is sure to fall out. But that's not today's issue.

Today's packet includes a wonderful map, showing where funds are raised, where UNICEF programs are "helping children, right now!" and where, in a few places, both are going on at the same time. All the places where money is being collected are in orange, all the places where it is being spent are in yellow, and the few "both" nations are in purple. The map is quite detailed. Even Luxembourg is noted. I've named the yellow nations the "Get" nations, and the orange nations the "Give" nations.

As one might expect, the "Give" nations are the usual suspects: The US and the "Anglosphere", (That covers you, Canada, even your French part) Western Europe, (and much of Eastern Europe!) Japan, South Korea and Israel. Yellow covers the rest of the Earth. Now, I understand we are blessed with wealth here and I have nothing in principle against supporting the poor kids in any country, but tell me, why are rich, OPEC states like Kuwait and Qatar and the UAE all GETTING and not GIVING?

In fact there is only one nation with a Muslim majority that donates to UNICEF, and that is Turkey- they are a purple "BOTH" nation. That's it. Turkey. Out of the whole Muslim world.

I am thinking my next letter will read: "I am sorry I am unable to meet your request for a donation. Please make up for this shortfall by scaling back your efforts in the United Arab Emirates, one of the richest regions on this planet."

Oh, I am sure they have no trouble finding underfed children in the shadows of cities that make Beverly Hills and Manhattan's Upper East Side look middle class. Those would be the children of the slave labor the UAE imports from Asia, and treats like human garbage. Yachts, jets, sportscars, they have money for, yet we are called upon to pay for the children of their abused servants. Disgusting.

If I'm in a bad mood, I'll ask why UNICEF hasn't opposed the blatantly biased anti-Israel policies of its parent organization even though, along with Turkey, Israel is the ONLY donor nation in the entire middle east. A Lousy way to treat a donor.
