Where Are the Israelis?
Those of us who have written countless opeds and blog posts trying to push Israeli strength only to witness its continued weakness will find expression for their frustration in the words of Dr. Steve Carol:
...Where are the Israelis? Where are Israeli citizens out demonstrating en masse - tens of thousands in every city - banging pots and pans, shouting, "The government must go"? Where is a nationwide strike to force the government to step down? Where are the massive calls for reforms to be made, for a sound policy voiced, and for Israel to return to the image, status and power it had at the conclusion of the Six Day War?
Today, Israel projects not strength, but weakness to the entire world, and especially to its enemies. They, like sharks smelling the blood in the water, are circling ever closer for the kill.Excuses of United States "pressure" on Israel have been made and will be made again. But Israel itself is doing the work of the Arabists in the US State Department. The US need not pressure Israel anymore when the Israeli government voluntarily takes the steps that will ensure the state's demise.
Read the whole thing.

You know, one day you should consider the possibility that the approximately 50% of Israelis who disagree with you on Israeli policies are neither anti-Israel nor wholly irrational.

Since the days of demonstrations against Oslo, fewer and fewer Israelis come to demonstrations -- because of the free-hand the police have at harming demonstrators.
And the police brutality at Amona was the final straw, when the police brutally wounded teenagers, who for the most part, were just passively demonstrating...ie, sitting in rooms...and the police and horses trampled and beat them...all at the behest of the government.
Demonstrating is ostracized as being "anti-democratic" and a threat to democracy...and that's why fewer and fewer people are willing to go out and demonstrate.

Israel certainly needs a new govt, but no new govt will restore the strategic position of 1967. On the other one hand one hopes it wouldnt restore the diplomatic isolation, or low economic standards of that era either. Israel must look forward, not back, and I think even Bibi understands that.
First of all Labour needs a new leader, whether Barak, Ayalon or someone else. When that happens, Labour will be less inclined to cling to the current govt. Kadima will need a new leadership going into elections, probably Lipni.
Theres not much that Likud can do to force the process, and it would only make them look silly to start mass demos, wouldnt it? Afterall, such tactics could be used against them one day.
demonstating is no threat to democracy, but refusing the IDFs orders to evacuate a place for reasons of policy and security is a defiance of the democratic state, and is a threat to democracy.
