Cathy Siepp

[ UPDATE: The longest tribute from her good friend Amy Alkon. ]

So I read that Cathy Siepp is dying of lung cancer, from a post by her daughter on Cathy's blog. Maybe the last post ever on that blog.

Wretchard writes that he "met her once, and briefly at the Pajamas Media kickoff in New York City. She had a glass of wine in her hand and a smile on her face."

I was there too and I met Cathy like that. She also wore a slinky black pants suit. We didn't talk much because it was a very busy room full of bloggers and journalists schmoozing, and she and I didn't have a connection beyond my occasional visit to her blog.

At the time I had no idea she had been battling lung cancer for years. (She mentioned it in several columns but you could have missed them if you weren't keeping track of her output.)

But I have another connection to Cathy Siepp.

Cathy and Luke Ford were very good friends and both were friends with Robert Avrech. Cathy and Luke teased each other endlessly on their blogs. As Luke says "We became the best of friends because we were both endlessly fascinated by Cathy Seipp." Robert mentioned each of them occasionally but his blog is more about his family and Jewish and Israel issues.

I first read Luke Ford when he posted on Protocols, the Yeshiva U group blog helmed by budding journalist Steven I Weiss. Steven basically gave Luke the keys and Luke ran everyone else off with his extemely provocative postings. But before Protocols shut down Luke linked to Robert's blog about the death of his son Ariel, who Luke knew and had studied Torah with.

I began reading Robert's blog and we became "blogfriends." We still haven't met but I have a standing invite for Shabbat dinner when I come out to the West Coast. I am glad I got to meet Cathy in person, although it was in New York and not her beloved LA. I know Robert will post about her in the coming week.

Every once in a while I think about giving up this blog, because I should be spending more time doing other things. But I have friends all over the world because of this blog, interesting passionate hospitable people who care about the same things I do. Maybe I could leave the blog and keep that world, but I don't know.

And then there are the internet connections among strangers . . . I was looking at my referrers just now and found this blogpost which credited me for introducing the blogger to a poem by Jack Gilbert. I posted a Gilbert poem once but it wasn't that one. So he must have followed my link to the page of Gilbert poems and chosen a different one, which I now read on his blogpost.
