Faking the Silence

From our newest co-blogger, Robert Friedman:

Breaking the Silence is led by a young, sincere-sounding media hound who, in a presentation at Columbia University several months ago that I attended, claimed to be the only one in Israel speaking about military/ethical issues. What utter self-righteous & self-important nonsense - even if it is lapped up by Israel's detractors.

Below is a letter I just sent to the NY Times re: today's article by Steve Erlanger.

To the Editor:

"Israeli Soldiers Stand Firm, but Duty Wears on the Soul" describes how Israeli society constantly grapples with difficult moral and ethical issues, even as it is forced to defend itself from Hezbollah's deadly attacks in the north, Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups' Qassam rockets in the south and the relentless attempts of suicide bombers in the heartland of the tiny Jewish state.

As a soldier in the Israeli Defense Forces, I remember our platoon participating in countless seminars and lectures where we paired up and studied biblical and Talmudic texts, Shakespeare and assorted publications from various Western armies on military and wartime ethics. Today, the IDF's Chief Education Officer, in partnership with organizations like Beit Morasha in Jerusalem, lead the way in similar training programs from the officer level to new recruits.

If only Israel's neighbors, especially the Palestinian Authority, would similarly consider the consequences of violence, incitement and terror on its own people and on Israeli civilians. Then the Middle East could be a peaceful paradise for all its inhabitants.

Sincerely,

Naftali Robert Friedman
