I Spy
Mary has a post about our trip to DC on Wednesday, including our visit to the International Spy Museum. We were originally intending to roam around the National Gallery but we saw a sign for the Spy Museum which seemed more manageable considering how late we got there. Given the current Washington circus show trial it seemed apropos.
We both had a good time, although Mary is not happy that there was no mention of Ireland's greatest intelligence operation, in which Mary's grandfather took part. My favorite exhibits were those which took me back to my childhood: the video clips from 1960s TV spy shows and the exhibit of Minox cameras, a must-have accessory for any 1960s spy. My dad had one, although he wasn't a spy. But he liked gadgets. (Well, he wasn't a spy, but he helped interrogate Nazi insurgents as an employee of the American Occupation Forces in post-WWII Europe. Long story.)

I'd love to read that long story if you should wish to post it.

Let's hope Mary's grandfather and the rest of the Twelve Apostles are given their due in the museum.
Of course, Mary, to most people in Britain, standing up and supporting the IRA (whose terrorism has killed and maimed far more British people than all the Muslims put together) is rather like standing up in Tel Aviv and proudly announcing that your ancestor was one of Yasser Arafat's spies. It doesn't bother me, as I've always tended to be sympathetic to the Republican side, but to the average Brit your pride in your grandfather and your attitude to the Palestinian resistance might seem a tad inconsistent.
