Litmus Test

Apropos of my agonizing over the term "liberal", Mary responds to Ben's critique of 300:

"Has the Litmus Test truly become "Do you believe our society must be defended with force, if yes. Step to the Right, you are a Conservative, if no, step to the Left, you are Liberal?"

As a public school/gay marriage/welfare supporter who is opposed to imprisonment for drug posession, and who is always characterized by the left as a 'right winger', I'd say the answer to that question is 'yes'.

Which means Rudy Giulani is really going to clean up.

... step to the Left, you are Liberal

What's Liberal about today's Left?

The war against terror is:

(a) an overwrought metaphor for a police action against some fringe groups;

or

(b) the name of our defense in the war against Western Civilization (and in particular, Israel and the United States) by fanatical Jihadists espousing an ideology based on a fascistic version Islam, under the sponsorship of tyrannical Middle Eastern regimes.

Pick one.

Elmer Davis once wrote that the first requirement of any society is that it must win its wars.

Ye gods, I even voted for McGovern and twice for Jimmy Carter, but if it's Rudy against either Hillary or Barack, well, I don't know.
