About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Sondheim Does South Park: "Something For Everyone, Blame Canada Tonight!"

A strange musical confluence on Saturday compelled me to write this. First, my son Shmoikel told me he couldn't get a song to stop running through his head. That's "Blame Canada," from "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut."

Some of the joyful lyrics are:

Sharon: Should we blame the government?
Liane: Or blame society?
Dads: Or should we blame the images on TV?
Sheila: No, blame Canada
Everyone: Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their beady little eyes
And flapping heads so full of lies
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Sheila: We need to form a full assault
Everyone: It's Canada's fault!

We then proceeded to sing the opening lines there in the car, while we were driving, as fate would have it, to see a student production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," music and lyrics by Mr. Stephen Sondheim.

And then a funny thing happened after the play. Sondheim met South Park. Here's how it went:

The best known song from "Forum" is the opening number, "Comedy Tonight," with the lyrics,

Something familiar, Something peculiar, Something for everyone: A comedy tonight!

That's a classic song, but what would happen, I wondered, if the writers of South Park teamed up with Sondheim on a delirious, fun-filled romp through "Forum" with a brightly revised book and lyrics? The big song would go something like this:

Something appealing, Something appalling, Something for everyone: Blame Canada tonight!

Nothing about Bush, nothing about GOP lies;
Bring on the Canadians with the beady little eyes!

Old situations,
New complications,
Nothing about Barack or Valerie Plame;
Tragedy tomorrow,
Blame Canada tonight!

Can you say "box office smash"?

Next, let me tell you about my other genre-busting idea, a wonderful tuneful tale of poetic felines portraying noble French peasants and law-enforcement officials. I call it "Les Miserable Cats."
