Hangin' with Lubovitch (Lar, Not Chabad)

I recently had the pleasure of hanging out with Lubovitch -- not Chabadniks in Crown Heights, but rather the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, which peformed a series at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University.

I liked the program because it was accessible in both the dance styles and the music. The opening segment, "Love Songs," featured American pop classics: Nature Boy, The More I Have You, Prelude to a Kiss, Everytime We Say Goodbye, and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. The dancers showed style and grace as they interpreted the many facets of love.

The other two segments worked as well, with music that clicked with me. The humorous second segment, "Little Rhapsodies," used a pianist for Robert Schumann's "Symphonic Etudes," Opus 13, while three men danced and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The third segment, "Dvorak's Serenade," used Dvorak's "Serenade in E Major," Opus 22 to good effect with a larger dance group.

Saturday's event ended the run for Lubovitch, but I'm sure the troupe will be back. I may be back there, too.
