Scary-Voice Man Gets a New Gig
I was placidly listening to WQXR this afternoon when a familiar voice cut through my bovine contentment. The voice was pitching the BMW Series 7, luring me to Deutchland's finest levels of engineered comfort and confidence when it hit me.
I had heard that voice before, not selling cars but rather . . .
Doom! Despair! Chaos! Corruption! Woe, woe to the viewers lured to the PBS documentary program Frontline by the urgent tones of the announcer I call Scary- Voice Man. If you've ever heard his voice-over promos for Frontline, you'll agree that he is the Spokesman for the Coming of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
I'll certainly pay attention to the BMW Series 7 from now on, but I might be afraid to sit in one of them, thanks to Scary-Voice Man.

"Mr. Scary-Voice" is Will Lyman, and he does more than 'Frontline', 'Nova, too, (whole shows, not just teasers or intros.) He does tons of politcal ads, it seems more each year. I detect no ideological pattern. I have envied him; he usually gets interesting stuff to interpret.
So a few years ago I signed up to take a local H.S. continuing-ed voiceover course. Comes the day, and I've got a cold with congestion so thick I was considering amateuer surgery with my cold chisel and a ball-peen hammer. But darn if that was going to go to waste. So I went, w/Thermos of tea&honey&lemon. They were into commercials, not real narration. I was not selected to get the discount from the studio offering the program (it was a bit scammy anyway). Anyway, Lyman Rules!
