About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

SPARTANS!!!!

My apologies to the naysayers who have expressed their opinions on 300 here, but I loved it. No, I was astounded by it. I've never seen anything quite like it. Its not so much a movie as a raw sensory assault. A true experience like movies once were and ought to be. Moreover, historically accurate or not, it makes one serious case for standing up and fighting for your people, your principles and yourself. With the likes of Nancy Pelosi galavanting off to Syria these days, the film's success gives me some hope that American culture may be more resilient than my naturally pessimistic demeanor supposed. This is not to mention the extraordinary visual pageant of the movie itself. This is what cinema is supposed to be: kinetic, visual, assaultive and viscerally alive. One of the few movies I've seen recently that didn't look like anything I've seen before. I've had enough of relentlessly inoffensive and beautifully mediocre exercises in pseudo artistry. 300 has blood and fire in it. Go see it.

Now were the guys who were "standing up and fighting for your people, your principles and yourself" the ones doing the invading or the ones getting invaded?

They were the ones who believed in democracy and freedom. And kicking the living hell out of those opposed to said principles.

My only complaint about the film is that they kept referring to them as "Persians" instead of "Iranians."

Noah: The Persians still call themselves Persians. They are the majority (but just barely) ethic group in the country of Iran. Iran, also has many Azeri Turks, Kurds, Arabs, and other ethnic groups, they may speak other languages and not generally get along with the Persians.
