Is the TX Senate influenced by the weirdness of Austin?
Long time readers of this blog know that although I was born and raised in Dallas TX I lived in Austin for many years and have a great affection for the place, including its idiosyncratic population. My cute bungalow (now rented out) is in the infamous "Keep Austin Weird" zipcode of 78704.
So I cringe at some of the comments below this piece on another radical imam giving another controversial invocation for another elected body in the US:
Imam Yusuf Kavakci of the Dallas Central Mosque is scheduled to be welcomed by Texas' Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Sen. Florence Shapiro, the Senate's senior Jewish member and sponsor of Kavakci's invocation.Great, another dhimmi Jew. Anyway. The Texas State Capitol happens to be in Austin (and it's a very pretty building of native pink granite intentionally just a bit taller than the US Capitol Building), but most of the lawmakers who live there aren't from Austin and don't represent Austin. Sen. Shapiro lives in Plano. I think Dewhurst is from Houston. So Austin may be an idiosyncratic place (all the commenters' anecdotes are true), and probably most of its residents think having this imam give the invocation was a good thing, but you can't blame this decision on Austin. As one commenter protested:
Wow. You can blame all this on Austin and everything, but what about the rest of the Texas Senate? They must have been around during the establishment of “Texas Muslim Legislative Day,” of which this lovely invocation marks the third installment (according to Dave in Texas). Somewhere Sam Houston is rolling in his grave. Did Davy C. die at the Alamo for this?Damn straight.

Reminds me of the old saying: "No man's life, liberty, or property is safe when the legislature of Texas is in session:.
