GOP '08: The Fear and Loathing Ticket
I told myself I wouldn't pay attention to the 2008 election until 2008, but I see that resistance is futile. What broke through mental barrier was the posting on Little Green Footballs of California Representative and GOP presidential candidate Duncan Hunter of his position on Israel. I agreed with every syllable of what he had to say, even his punctuation.
Then LGF published comments from ABC Radio by Senator Fred Thompson on Israel and terror. Again, he captured my views straight down the line.
Then it hit me. Hunter. Thompson. Political marketing magic. The Fear and Loathing Ticket.
The Hunter-Thompson ticket pays homage -- or, if you will, rips off -- the name recognition of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. He made his name with a couple of great books and then coasted for a long time on his wildman reputation until he committed suicide on February 20, 2005.
The nomenclature irony is delicious. Hunter S. Thompson is probably spinning in his sarcophagus at the thought of straight-laced Republicans glomming on to his good name to promote a presidential ticket.
With this prospect, I'll have to at least investigate these two candidates while I also ponder the possibilities of a Unity '08 ticket. Dream candidates: Mike Bloomberg and Joe Lieberman. Wouldn't that make for an amazing seder at the White House?

The idea of Blomberg gives me the willies. Will he want to ban trans-fats everywhere, require us to get up a 6:00 a.m. and take the bus to work.

Good luck. With all the media attention it is a real effort not to get caught up in it.
