I Love You, You're Perfect, You're Chinese
Staying firmly behind the cultural curve, I barely had any awareness of the smash musical "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" until I had a chance to see it recently -- the Mandarin version playing through this weekend at the Westside Theater in NYC.
And you know what? I think the foreign language angle helped it. The Chinese cast added an intriguing angle on the material. Instead of a bouncy, New Yorky take on the material, I got to see it through another culture (the English lyrics and dialogue appeared as supertitles above the stage).
The four-member cast projected lots of personality and longing and provided a welcome change from the predictable Seinfeldesque tone and type the play might normally have.
See it with someone you love, or want to love, or at least want to eat dim sum with.

Damn it! I love that show, and the only version I've ever seen is in English. Now I shall feel cheated until the Mandarin one comes to the Edinburgh Fringe (and we've had weirder stuff.....)
Though I suppose Magyar or Navaho would do.
