About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

The Orwellian rewriting of Jewish history, again

How dim the gold has become, [how] changed is the fine gold jewelry! The holy stones are scattered at the head of every street.
-- Eicha 4:1

Two years ago I collected a lot of blogposts about the history of the Temple Mount, and posted them on Tisha B'Av, the anniversary of mourning for the destruction of Jerusalem (and a lot of other things). (Tisha B'Av began this evening and continues tomorrow until evening.)

Every year I take the opportunity to connect the historical destruction of the temple to the ongoing destruction of its remnants, artifacts of Jewish history turned into rubble before our eyes while not only Israeli officialdom, but the rest of the world stands by and lets it happen. (At the same time the usual outrage - aided and abetted by CAIR, by the way - is whipped up over repair of a ramp which is nowhere near any sensitive archeological or sacred site.)

Islam has a long history of erasing sacred artifacts of subject religions (like the Bamiyan Buddhas), or transforming them into Muslim ones (for example, the Hagia Sophia). (The current violence against holy sites is a component of a larger effort to overwrite Jewish history with a Palestinian "narrative" (the Palestinians being the stalking horse for Islamist supremacy), being played out in the halls of academe as well as archeological sites, the most recent example being the tenure controversy over Nadia Abu El Haj.)

I understand why Muslim religious authorities would treat Judaism as a subject religion, but why do Jews respond as dhimmis in their own homeland? It's not like we aren't going to be vilified anyway.

Below is a good summary of the Temple Mount situation described more fully here.

Actual video of construction.

More here.

Here's how the BBC spins this story. Basically it turns the truth upside down. You would never know viewing these slides that Jews are not allowed to pray on the Mount or that Muslims are destroying Jewish artifacts.

Dore Gold on the Muslim confrontation with Jewish history, described further in his book:

This story about French perfidy provides another example of Orwellian rewriting of Jewish history. Did you know that parts of Israel are considered to be French national soil? You have to read the whole thing to grasp the full scope of the deception but here's a piece:

. . . . holding any entertainment at a tomb seems offensive -- violating the dignity of the dead -- as well as somewhat macabre. But the music festival at Kings' Tomb is all the more repugnant. It is clearly an Arab nationalist celebration at a Jewish tomb of much historical interest. A Jewish site is used for an anti-Jewish call to arms, thus violating the site's deed of transfer to France. Moreover, France (and other Western states and agencies) have tolerated or collaborated with -- if not sponsored -- several Arab falsifications of history in the Festival publicity, even if not agreeing with these falsifications.

Furthermore, the French state has caused damage to antiquities on its self-proclaimed National Domain sites, thus violating the Israeli Antiquities Law. Jon Seligman, Jerusalem Regional Archeologist of the Antiquities Authority, notified Israel's Foreign Ministry (22 January 2001): "The French Consulate has conducted works at these sites, causing irreversible damage to antiquities and contravening the provisions of the law governing the right to conduct archeological work, using the claim that the sites are under French 'sovereign' control . . . . The ancient tombs and miqva'ot (ritual baths) excavated by de Saulcy in 1863 are some of the most significant tombs found in the city of Jerusalem. Careful preservation and maintenance of these finds is important for the conservation of a site which clearly is of universal significance..."

He mentioned the "severe damage" to the tombs caused by the electrical work in 1996. This scoffing at the antiquities law by the French consulate occurred not only at Kings' Tomb, St. Anne's, and the Pater Noster (Eleona) Church on the Mount of Olives -- all under Jordanian control from 1948 to 1967 -- but at a monastery in Abu Ghosh within the Green Line, under Israel's jurisdiction since 1948, and also claimed as French National Domain.

Ron Coleman says that “Never again” is the Big Lie of the second half of the twentieth century. Yes. And rewriting history is one outrage to which we Jews supposedly say "Never Again!" Well, only if it's Nazi history. We get justifiably exercized over David Irving and his ilk, but the WAQF of the Temple Mount we placate instead of denounce.

(The illustration is from Digging the Temple Mount: How Not to Do It, from Dr Leen Ritmeyer's blog about archeology at the Temple Mount. Lots more good stuff there.)

KBTC, a PBS affiliate based in Tacoma, will be airing a program entitled "We Are Them: The Words of Rachel Corrie," tomorrow night (Tuesday, July
24) at 7:30. Craig and Cindy Corrie, as well as friends and fellow
activists of Rachel's, were interviewed for the documentary. The 1/2
hour program is produced by "Full Focus," described as Washington's only
weekly documentary series.

Unfortunately, PBS and Full Focus are likely to hear negative feedback
from some viewers -- as is the case any time Rachel's name is brought up
in the media. To counter those comments, PBS needs to hear from those
of us who support their focus on Rachel's story and the reality of life
in Gaza. Please email PBS at programming@kbtc.org
and Full Focus at fullfocus@kbtc.org
. Even a one-sentence email will let them
know that there are viewers who appreciate their willingness to air this
program.

We Are Them
The Words of Rachel Corrie

Tuesday, July 24
7:30pm

In 2003 Rachel Corrie was crushed to death when she was run over by an
Israeli Defense Force bulldozer.

The words that Rachel Corrie wrote became a window to a far away and
forgotten place and brought attention to the myriad of human rights
violations happening in the Gaza strip.

Her words and her death have become mired in controversy, but her story
reminds us that from Western Washington to the Middle East, we are all
brothers and sisters, and that no one is truly free while others are
oppressed.

We'd like to know what you think of the show. Please contact us with
your questions or comments. Email us at fullfocus@kbtc.org
