Ahoy, A New Human Rights Whale
I took a look at the websites of Amnesty USA and Human Rights Watch today and guess what? No Israel on the home pages! I almost plotzed with surprise.
Could it be that such groups have thrown so many harpoons at Israel over the years that they have decided that a new whale might be a juicier target (and one better suited for fundraising)? Amnesty features Darfur with home-page highlights on China, Mexico, the US, India, and Iran.
Human Rights Watch, meanwhile, gives China's Olympic crackdown big play, along with items on Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and South Africa (for the murder of lesbians). Overall, China is looking like the new Moby Dick.
I wonder if the civil war in Gaza finally made it ludicrous to come down on Israel all the time when the truly egregious human rights violations are going on in full view in Gaza.
I'm sure Israel will get back on the home pages, but for now I'll grant these groups some respect for hurling their harpoons at some big bad whales and leaving the minnow alone.

If it's anything, it's been the drop in donations from people offended by the demonization of Israel and not any sudden recognition that the dysfunction in the middle east is not about a political grievance.

Don't be silly. They are just taking a break and will be back on Israel's case soon.
