Apocalypse 'R' Us

Gary Alexander, the Recovering Apocoholic, wrote a chronology of the successive apocalypsi which shaped his consciousness, beginning with his birth just 62 years ago:

I was born in July 1945, the day the first atomic bomb exploded in Alamogordo, New Mexico. That mushroom crowd has haunted our lives ever since. As a teenager, I became convinced the world would end before I was 30. Too soon old…too late smart, I was very, very wrong:

My email list had fun with this topic. IC, who forwarded the link, added:

The Population Bomb
Global Cooling/The Coming Ice Age
AIDS
The Great Depression of 1990
Bankruptcy 1995
Mad Cow disease
Y2K
The Tech Bubble
9/11
Serbia/Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan wars
SARS
Global Warming
Bird Flu
Katrina
Triple Deficits (Budget, Trade, Balance of Payments)
Deflation in 2003
$200/barrel oil
The Sub-prime housing loan implosion

SD:

You forgot Peak Oil.

FW:

Aspertame!

JSW:

which reminds me of .....

Alar
Vaccinations

MM:

The global water shortage
Upcoming disastrous floods
China's economic expansion
China's economic collapse

JK:

I don't think I've seen anyone mention one of the biggies: Nuclear annihilation (Helen Caldicott, "Eight Minutes to Midnight", etc.)

Me:

I remember the scare about nuclear winter. The same people who used to think the nuclear arms race was the worst thing in the world now think it's ok if Iran gets an atomic bomb.

The whole Club of Rome/Malthusian thing - mass starvation from population explosion, running out of natural resources. I was an enthusiastic member of Zero Population Growth when I was 17.

Also nanotechnology running amok. I think that's a realistic fear though......

The Singularity!
More.

IC:

[a friend sent this addendum:]

If I could add a few other faves:

Vaccines/thimerosal Artificial sweeteners/cancer (heck, anything/cancer)
Peak oil
EMF "diseases"
Inorganic chemicals
"Hate" groups and militias
American theocracy
Asteroid collisions
Fiat money
IRS shadow government
Masons/illuminati/Bilderbergers/CFR/'77 Yankees
Global terrorism (in that you have a better chance of drowning in your bathtub)
Scary-sounding disease o' the week (drug-resistant TB, necrotizing fasciitis, dengue fever, West Nile virus, et al.)
HIV/AIDS as armageddon
Armageddon, period
Boy bands

We're living so long, enjoying so much prosperity, that we're now exposed to more things that can kill us and cause our utter ruin than ever before! (And according to the NYT, it's hardest on the poor!)

Dying even as I type,

[name withheld]

[ Me again: I am not going to find links for all these - look them up yourself. But since it's my blog I linked to my concerns about grey goo and the Borg. ]

Yeah, the Noam Chomsky plea. Read Nick Cohen's wonderful book, "What's Left: How Liberals Lost Their Way" for a fantastic dissection of Chomskianism in a chapter entitled, "The Boy at the Edge of the Gang"

And then, you get an award. Where does it stop?!
