Bush's Bold Move for Attorney General
September 1, 2007, Chappaqua, New York: President Bush rocked American politics today when he announced his nominee for Attorney General, to replace Alberto Gonzales. Speaking at the quaint train station in this commuter town in the New York suburbs, with the nominee standing beside him, President Bush said,
Thank you for coming here today. I am pleased to announce my nominee for the next Attorney General of the United States. This is a time for decisive action, for vision. With over a year remaining in my term, I vow I will continue to pursue strategies that protect the United States and the liberties of our citizens.Unity is a theme of this time in our national history. I am ready to reach out to find the best person for this job, without excessive focus on political considerations. We are not Republicans, we are not Democrats. We are Americans. In that spirit of conciliation, I am honored to introduce the next Attorney General of the United States . . .
. . . Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has agreed to take on this historic assignment. For those who are not familiar with her, Senator Clinton brings an outstanding set of qualifications to this position. She's a lawyer. She's a mother. She worked at the Rose Law Firm which, of course, is a law firm. She attended Wellesley College, which is where smart women went to school in the days when they couldn't get into Yale. Although I'm told she has been inside Skull and Bones, which counts for a lot with Poppy and me. And she spent four years at the crotch -- excuse me, the seat -- of power as First Lady during the two terms of -- help me out, what was his name, Hillary?
[cue uproarious laughter from press and notables]
Mrs. Clinton told me she's "as pleased as punch" for this opportunity to serve her country. She has given me her personal pledge that she will faithfully execute the the solemn responsibilities of the office. Indeed, she told me she expects to be the "avenging sword of justice" in this final, historic phase of the Bush Administration.
Naturally, Mrs. Clinton will be very, very busy in her new responsibilities, so she will be resigning as Senator from New York upon her confirmation by the Senate, which, I hope, will happen with all due speed. She has indicated she has some other activities so, in the spirit of our pro-working women agenda here at the White House, Mrs. Clinton will be working at home one day a week and will have flexible hours during the work week.
Thank you, and we'll now take your questions.

Lacks even the veneer of plausibility.
