Open Letter to the Dixie Chicks: What About the Terror in Mexico?

Dear Dixie Chicks:

You caused quite a stir when you said you were ashamed to be from the same state as the President. The backlash against your comments caused dark mutterings about suppression of free speech and artistic rights in the U.S. More recently, you spoke out about a murder case in Arkansas -- you are compassionate, and I credit that emotion.

Given your sensitivity to threats to artists and others, I would like to see you speak out against real repression of artists just south of our home state of Texas.

You see, singers there have more to worry about than whether people are questioning their patriotism and forcing them to play in smaller venues.

In Mexico, performers are being murdered. Puts your torments into perspective, doesn't it? According to this Associated Press story,

A wave of organized crime violence terrorizing many parts of Mexico is driving fear into the heart of the entertainment business with the murders of several popular musicians, suggesting no one is immune to the rampant brutality.

Most disquieting were the weekend slayings of two singers who had crooned only about love and loss, not drugs and guns like some "narcocorrido" celebrities killed in the past.

Writer Elijah Wald did a book on Mexican drug music and musicians, details here.

I'd like to see U.S. artists like you, or Bruce Springsteen, or others who feel the hot spur of repression in the United States will reach out to support their brothers and sisters in Mexico who are suffering even more, although they live in a land blessedly free of the baleful influence of George Bush.

Come on, Chicks -- speak out for those who really need help. Their lives, literally, are depending on it.
