About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Casting a Wide Net at the Greenwich Library

I made a culture run to the awesome Greenwich Library today and came home with arms full of a rich bounty of entertainment in three media. Here's the haul of goodies, with some notes:

Movies: Deja Vu with Denzel Washington. I've already seen this great thriller, but I wanted to watch one scene again, one that kicked off a blog idea.

Books: 2666 by the late Roberto Bolano. I've read very positive reviews of this book, set in the fictional Mexican border city of Santa Teresa (Ciudad Juarez). At over 800 pages long, that's a lot of train reading, but the locale fascinates me so I'll give it a try. If I can't swing it, hey, I'll go back to my chick lit research reading.

Music: Finally, the main event gets started. I always feel like Queen for a Day scrambling down supermarket aisles scooping up groceries when I hit the CD section at the Greenwich Library. In this case, music is the meal, and the Greenwich buffet is always open. Today's delectables:

Maria de Barros: Danca Ma Mi (Dance With Me), from Cape Verde. Track 8, "Um Tem Um Amor" is knocking me out as I write this.

Puerto Plata: Mujer de Cabaret, music from the Dominican Republic

Latin Lovers: Canciones de Amor

Sharp Dressed Men: A Tribute to ZZ Top (I can't wait to hear Kenny Chesney singing "Tush", too bad the collection doesn't have a cover of "(Somebody Else Been) Shakin' Your Tree")

U2: The Best of 1990-2000

The Tubes: Then and Now (Happy memories of the late 1970s with "Don't Touch Me There" and "White Punks on Dope")

The Bonnie Raitt Collection (songs about love and pain, pain, and more pain)

Bonnie Raitt and Friends (songs about love and pain, pain and more pain, this time live and in concert)

Lou Reed, John Cale and Nico: Le Bataclan '72 (one cannot listen to "Femme Fatale" and "Waiting for the Man" too many times)

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble: Live at Montreaux 1982 and 1985 ("Texas Flood," no other comment needed)

The Best of the McCoys, featuring "Hang on Sloopy"

El Potro de Sinaloa: Dejame Vacio (Mexican performer in a black cowboy hat, worth a try, especially for songs like "Triste Destino")

Diana Reyes y Trono: Juntos Cruzando Fronteras (five guys in white cowboy hats and a curvy singer in tight jeans, high boots and a shirt knotted way up on her sternum. Where can I get the DVD?)
