David Harris, Here's Your New Radio Ad Schedule

The radio station of the New York Times, WQXR, has refused to run an ad from the American Jewish Committee (AJC). Dealing with the rocket attacks on Sderot, the ad was read by AJC's executive director, David Harris. I listen to WQXR at work, and have heard the AJC ads.

The Times turned down the ad for various moronic reasons, which Harris explains here:

Here’s the written explanation from Tom Bartunek, president of New York Times Radio and general manager of WQXR:

”In my judgement several elements of this spot are outside our bounds of acceptability. First, the opening line— `Imagine you had fifteen seconds to find shelter from an oncoming missile’—does not make clear that the potential target of the missile is not our listening area, and as a consequence, runs the risk of raising anxiety in a misleading way. Second, the description of the missiles as arriving `day or night’ and `daily’ is also subject to challenge as being misleading, at least to the degree that reasonable people might be troubled by the absence of any acknowledgement of reciprocal Israeli military actions. Finally, in my judgement the `countdown’ device and the general tone of the message do not meet our guidelines for decorum.”

WQXR joins Ms. Magazine in the proud ranks of principled, progressive media outlets that refuse to demean themselves by accepting certain types of filthy Jewish advertising. As I wrote during the Ms. dustup in January, I'm happy to offer the AJC alternative media outlets for its thoughtful ads. If the AJC moves them to another outlet, I will be sure to offer that station (and its many fine, upscale advertisers) my support. So, David Harris, here's your new radio schedule:

Interview with film director David Cronenberg.

Amy Taubin: I want to ask you about "At the Suicide of the Last Jew in the World in the Last Cinema in the World" [Cronenberg’s four-minute film for Chacun son cinéma, the compilation put together for the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival]. French Jewish Leaders: Whistling Dixie Past the Graveyard?

Our French landsmen are in a state of high dudgeon these days over two matters that struck me as a case of synchronicity. First, Jewsweek reported this charming item (emphasis added),

A French newspaper revealed over the weekend that some 1,000 apartment buildings in the Mediterranean city of Nice have maintained a decades-old municipal regulation barring Jews from becoming tenants.

The regulation was put in place during World War II, when parts of France were cooperating and collaborating with their Nazi occupiers.

French Jewish leaders expressed outrage over the discovery, and demanded the regulations be revised immediately.

Immediately? What's the big rush?

Then, in an example of holding two contradictory thoughts in mind at one time, there came this item. According to the JTA, 7,000 French Jews signed a petition asking Congress for refugee status in the U.S. because of religious persecution.

A motion for cherem

In a previous post about the factional fighting in the Brit "anti-Zionist" movement, frequent Kesher Talk commenter "Cynic" says:

Isn't it about time that something was done about distinguishing the "accident" of birth and/or names from those who identify with Judaism and its practices?

Maybe there should be a "Not In Our Name" movement making this plain to those in the market place that the Chomskys and Shamirs do not form part of the people of Israel?

This idea is very tempting. But like attempts to define "free speech" and "pornography," motions to read individuals out of the Jewish people are fraught with partisanship. "I know it when I see it" is not a good enough argument. To their credit, our leaders have always been reluctant to place an individual in cherem, perhaps feeling that such a small and embattled people cannot afford to repudiate even its most despicable members. Or more so, refusing to close the door to tshuvah.

But some of these people really hate Jews, and furthermore, tell lies about us, and even further, build their careers around telling lies about us, and finally, most of them do not consider themselves part of the Jewish people in any way. The only time they place the Jewish hat upon their heads is to pose for the cameras as dissident Jews who defy the supposed blanket of conformity imposed by the mainstream Jewish community (a real laugh, considering the rampant ideological anarchy throughout our divisive nation, which we not only tolerate but are proud of).

Yet I agree with Cynic that there must be some organized effort to call these people out, preferably with a little Groucho-like humor. Ideas are welcome.

Cinnamon Stillwell: N. CA Representative for Campus Watch

Having spent the last five years as a political columnist and more recently, a blogger, I've now decided to further my involvement in the battle of ideas. In particular, the one raging on American college campuses and most especially, Mideast studies. At this critical juncture in history, it's imperative that the next generation receive an accurate, unbiased education in this most crucial of subjects. To that end, I'm happy to announce that starting April 1, I'll be the Northern California Representative for Campus Watch.

Zombie Captures San Francisco "Antiwar" Protesters in all their Glory

As expected, the streets of San Francisco were home to the usual bizarre assortment of "antiwar" protesters this past weekend. What that actually translated into were communists, pro-terrorists, Jew-haters, 9/11 conspiracists, acid-casualties from the 60s, brainwashed college students, a sea of bloody (literally) Palestinian flags, Che tattoos, lots of skin, and a few genuine, if confused, pacifists. And the America-hating "textbook" soon to be used in San Francisco public school classrooms, "Addicted to War," also made an appearance. As has been the pattern for the past few years, a group of brave counter-protesters showed up too.

The inimitable zombie parodies the lunacy of the local left with the usual revealing photos and clever commentary. Click here to venture down the rabbit hole...

Erasing History, One Objection at a Time

Does objecting to history because it hurts your feelings make it go away?

The University of Leeds was accused of infringing free speech last night when it cancelled a lecture on “Islamic anti-Semitism” by a German academic.

Matthias Köntzel arrived at the university yesterday morning to begin a three-day programme of lectures and seminars, but was told that it had been called off on “security grounds”.

For security grounds, read "insecurity grounds." Namely, the fact that some Muslims can't deal with the free discussion of history. And some academics in the west seem eager to pander to their every insecurity.

Jewish Self-Hatred on the Right

Gershom Scholem, the great scholar of Jewish mysticism, once criticized his friend Hannah Arendt for lacking what he called ahavat yisrael, a love of Israel. There are, of course, numerous permutations of this concept, but for me it has always meant the love of one's people, their struggles, their history, their labors and their creative will. Camus once said that a mission exists for any human group which knows how to derive pride and fecundity from its labors and its sufferings.

This has always been my sense of chosenness and my sense of Zionism. Unfortunately, there are those among us -- and always have been -- for whom ahavat yisrael means nothing at all. Or worse still, it means the rejection and condemnation of all who do not meet their exacting standards of what yisrael ought to be. Most of the time I deal with the leftist form of this disease, i.e. those who claim that their love for the Jewish people demands that they destroy it through assimilation or universalization. But the problem is by no means confined to the left.

Lovely: German Bishops Compare West Bank to Warsaw Ghetto

Of all the people in the world who ought to be careful about making insensitive remarks comparing Jews to Nazis, you think high among them would be German Catholic religious leaders. Unfortunately that is not the case.

Yad Vashem lambasted a group of visiting German Catholic bishops on Tuesday for comparing the situation in the Palestinian territories with the Holocaust, calling the contentious remarks "political exploitation and demagoguery" and a gross distortion of history.

The sharp condemnation ... followed reports in the German press of comparisons made by senior German bishops between conditions in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II and current conditions in Ramallah, resulting from Israeli military activities.

"The remarks illustrate a woeful ignorance of history and a distorted sense of perspective," Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev wrote in a Tuesday letter to Cardinal Karl Lehmann, who led the Conference of German Catholic Bishops on a 10-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Alvin Rosenfeld and "the New Anti-Semitism" controversy continues

Ritual Self-Slaughter

I read Alvin Rosenfeld's essay, "'Progressive' Jewish Thought and the New Anti-Semitism" this evening. My colleagues have covered the major points in depth, but one passage in the essay amazed me -- "New Rituals of Dissent."

Rosenfeld writes about Jews who incorporate anti-Zionist aspects into traditional Jewish observances, such as Sukkot and brit milahs. One couple declared at their son's bris:

"We are thrilled to pronounce you a Jew without the Right of Return. Your name contains our deep hope that you will explore and celebrate your Jewish identity without confusing it with nationalism."

My question: If the couple is so intent on separating identity from nationalism, why did they circumcise their son in the first place? Surely, as progressives, they must know that circumcision is a barbaric symbol of national identity, a "covenant" meant to distinguish Jews from everybody else and therefore an exclusionist, racist signifier of everything wrong about being Jewish? Well, isn't that so? Shouldn't they do an anti-circumcision ritual, pledging a no-cut covenant with all the oppressed species of Gaia?

What kind of lame progressives are they? Don't they realize that their traumatized child may grow, because of this identification with his fellow Jews, to become a (gasp) ZIONIST?

Oh, the horror for progressive parents.

by Alvin H. Rosenfeld

In December, 2006, I published an essay with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) titled "'Progressive' Jewish Thought and the New Anti-Semitism."
