Is Bush a neo-liberal?
According to a new study, the thick lumpy political center breaks down into several discrete categories.
Strategists and the media variously describe independents as “swing voters," "moderates” or "centrists" who populate a sometimes-undefined middle of the political spectrum. That is true for some independents, but the survey revealed a significant range in the attitudes and the behavior of Americans who adopt the label.. . . . The survey data established five categories of independents: [1] closet partisans on the left and right; [2] ticket-splitters in the middle; [3] those disillusioned with the system but still active politically; [4] ideological straddlers whose positions on issues draw from both left and right; and [5] a final group whose members are mostly disengaged from politics.
Below, my email list provides a good illustration of number [4] in a discussion stimulated by a WaPo op-ed.
Before you read on, a few definitions: Neoliberal. Neoconservative. (Yes, it’s Wikipedia, but both entries are sourced up the wazoo.)

Democracy Whiskey Sexy 2007
The Stuck Mojo video showcased on LGF reminded me of Dr Frank's response to the invasion of Iraq, "Democracy Whiskey Sexy." (Lyrics below)
I was going to link to an mp3 but I wasn't able to find one on the web lately, so let me recommend my Fourth of July playlist from last year, which leads off with "Democracy Whiskey Sexy" and includes more music you might not hear elsewhere, like Boxharp and Michael Hall.
Someone at LGF recommended this mashup from the Stuck Mojo site:

Nervous in the Sweet Air of Freedom in Havana
A striking movie scene occurs in The Falcon and the Snowman, when two U.S. spies for the Soviet Union cross back into the US, where the Federal agents are eagerly awaiting. One slams one of the spies (played by Tim Hutton, maybe?) and snarls, "You f'ing traitor!" (If I recall the movie incorrectly, straighten me out).
An article in the International Herald Tribune about American criminals livin' la vida loca in Cuba reminded me of that scene. It seems these are nervous days for the cop killers and hijackers who left this fascist hellhole for the sweet air of socialist freedom in Cuba.
Consider the case of one "Assata Shakur, formerly Joanne Chesimard, a leader of the Black Liberation Army, who is one of the most notorious of the fugitives."

The Latest from Robert Novak
Robert Novak's latest column, A President All Alone, discusses Bush's distance - even isolation - from congressional Republicans, and their chagrin at ongoing revelations of Bush administration incompetence.
"We always have claimed that we were the party of better management," one House leader told me. "How can we claim that anymore?"
But the final paragraphs in the article is what really grabbed my attention.

The Wilson-Plame controversy continues
Byron York says that Plame's testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is slightly different from her testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
As part of its probe into pre-war intelligence, the committee interviewed Valerie Plame Wilson for the portions of the committee’s report dealing with the Niger uranium matter. At that time, as now, the question of how the CIA chose Joseph Wilson for the Niger trip was a subject of great interest. But Missouri Republican Sen. Christopher Bond, vice chairman of the committee, says Mrs. Wilson did not tell the committee about the young junior officer, the call from the vice president’s office, or the passing CIA official who suggested Joseph Wilson’s name.“Friday was the first time we have ever heard that story,” Sen. Bond said in a statement to National Review Sunday evening. “Obviously if we had, we would have included it in the report. If Ms. Wilson’s memory of events has improved and she would now like to change her testimony, I’m sure the committee staff would be happy to re-interview her.”
Bond disputes several other contentions of Ms Plame as well.
Clifford May says:

The Wilson-Plame controversy marches on
[ UPDATE: At this end of this post is video of Victoria Toensing, drafter of the Act which defines whether or not a CIA agent is covert, attempting to answer questions put to her by Rep Henry Waxman. You have to see it to appreciate that this really is a show trial. ]
Andy McCarthy notes that Valerie Plame was outed by a Russian spy over ten years ago, according to the news media which now uncritically report her version of events.
It is the contention made in a 2005 brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit by the Times along with ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, AP, Newsweek, Reuters America, the Washington Post, the Tribune Company (which publishes the Los Angeles Times and the Baltimore Sun, among other papers), and the White House Correspondents . . . in an attempt to quash subpoenas issued to journalists — the argument being that if Mrs. Wilson's cover had already been blown, there could have been no crime when an administration official (who we now know to be Richard Armitage, not Scooter Libby) leaked her identity to journalist Robert Novak, and thus there was no need to compel reporters to reveal their sources.. . . How can it be possible that a leak in 2002 "jeopardized and even destroyed entire networks of foreign agents" associated with Mrs. Wilson's covert assignment when, by the media's own account to a federal court, those networks had to have been blown for years?
From a damning timeline which confirms that Joe Wilson thought Saddam had WMDs (and would use them on US troops if we invaded) up to the end of the war (based on his own op-eds):

Snapshots from Valerie Plame's testimony
[ UPDATE: They're liveblogging over at the Powerline Forum. Snippets at the end of this post.

I don't have a TV and our Wilson/Plame watcher Alcibiades is busy, so I'm posting snippets of the Corner's live-blogging of Plame's testimony:
The Invisible Leaker [John Podhoretz]
Valerie Plame Wilson has been testifying for an hour, and while it appears on a chart, the name of Richard Armitage — the actual person who actually leaked her identity to Robert Novak (and, a month earlier, to Bob Woodward) — has yet to be spoken. Scooter Libby's name? Ten times.

Straining at gnats
Bill Bennett:
Now that we have established that no rock and no expense will be left unturned and unspent, that no reporter involved will be left unsubpoenaed for leaking or even purportedly leaking a classified agent's name, when we have some suspicion that a person who works at the CIA might be covert (but turns out not to be): Can we please begin the investigation and subpoenaing of journalists—also known as witnesses to a crime—for leaking classified national-security information in a time of war?!
. . . I'm not talking about disgruntled spouses with political differences with the president, I'm talking about the disclosure of the most serious war-time planning and procedures to keep our country safe. I'm talking about disclosing the secret detention facilities of high-value terrorists, I'm talking about the disclosure of terrorist surveillance programs, I'm talking about the disclosure of the Treasury Department's SWIFT program that tracked terrorist financing—all of which are now caput because insiders leaked to the press and the press willingly published these classified secrets—-NONE of the programs that were leaked were illegal, all of them were of great value, all of them are over or changed as a result of the disclosure.
And let's revisit the slap on the wrist to Sandy Burglar while we're at it.
UPDATE: The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform wants to follow up with Fitzgerald on the disclosure of Valerie Plame's status. Byron York says:

We are entitled to be tried by a jury of our peers
But sometimes we are tried by a jury of our fellow citizens who have rocks between their ears and no conception of civic responsibility.
First we had Denis Collins, who did not reveal until the trial was over that he had written a book about the CIA, and who less than 24 hours after the verdict published seven pages of notes at Huffington Post.
And now Ann Somebody tells Chris Matthews she thinks Libby should get a pardon and "it would be more fun to follow" if he gets one now rather than right before Bush leaves office. Watch the video at Hot Air.
Libby won't have to get pardoned. His appeal will be successful thanks to these airheads. Maybe they are Rove moles.
[Alcibiades adds: From the same show, Watch Kate O'Beirne argue with Chris Matthews about whether Scooter should be pardoned right away. She corrects him on the facts of the case as established by the trial, that Valerie Plame suggested Joe Wilson for the trip the day before the Vice President was even briefed on the situation in Niger; typical of Chris, he'll forget the correction by tomorrow and will continue to peddle the set of facts that he prefers.
By the way, I have a somewhat different read on this juror than does Judith. This one seems okay to me, diligent, possessing integrity, whereas Denis Collins is just atrocious. But, hey, he wants his hefty book advance. Who can blame him?
Speaking of which, he's described by his colleagues as: The longtime journalist, 57, who has also written for The Miami Herald and the San Jose Mercury New, was recalled as smart,
hardworking and energetic, although not always "coloring within the lines." ]

Speaking About Exploiting Jury Duty
Denis Collins is a juror on the Scooter Libby trial, somewhat discussed during the course of the trial because he had worked for Bob Woodward, who testified, and was a neighbor of Tim Russert, who also testified. Since unlike Russert, Woodward gave some very mature testimony, there was some hope that this guy would not prove to be an utter moonbat.
Wrong.
It turns out, a fact he did not reveal at the voir dire of the trial, that he had also authored a book on classified agents at the CIA, one of whom, a female of an appropriate age, just happened to have worked in Africa, very like, one, oh, Valery Plame. Meanwhile, he's already been on all the best liberal talk shows airing his opinions on this case. He's like the self-important Joe Wilson of the jury, can't shut up, is working to exploit this experience as a way to foist his self importance on the rest of us and is similarly endowed with important hair.
The guy has already come out with a massive article about his trial experience on Huffington Post, which, as we all know, is a nice politically balanced website. 7 pages. I expect he stayed up all night long, after the many talk shows he performed on last night, in order to get the work done in time to launch it this morning.
It would be interesting to know just who he was talking to to get this arranged while the jury was deliberating.
Can a deal for a book be far behind? Maybe he has already made one?

Breaking News: Mr. Cheney Has a Heart After All
Don't you love it when the NY Slimes speaks in the passive voice!
Still, liberal critics of the administration had a field day with the trial. They are hoping the Democrats who now control Congress will use the case to investigate Mr. Cheney’s role further. Mr. Schumer, who was among the first to call for a special prosecutor in the case, suggested in an interview that they might. No need to "question experts" in order to write up this particular paragraph. All that reporter SHERYL GAY STOLBERG had to do in this case was consult the demeanor of her colleagues in the newsrooms she shares with them.
The reference to Schumer is interesting, however. Clarice Feldman, who has written extensively at Just One Minute and American Thinker on the Scooter Libby case believes that Schumer worked a behind the scenes deal with James Comey, who was then Deputy Attorney General, to agree to bring Patrick Fitzgerald onto the case. As a very relevant aside, both James Comey and Patrick Fitzgerald prosecuted a case against Mark Rich, with Libby as Rich's attorney. They lost, Scooter won and the ruling in this case later formed the basis of the pardon for Mark Rich by President Clinton.
Meanwhile, Schumer, now, is all aglow to begin all kinds of investigations into high administration officials, the higher, the better.
“I think there is a view in the public that Libby was the fall guy,” Mr. Schumer said, “and I do think we will look at how the case shows the misuse of intelligence both before and after the war in Iraq.”The successful prosecution of Libby has apparently merely whetted his appetite for larger game. Although the misuse of intelligence in such a regard seems like a loaded phrase. Whose intelligence? I certainly feel that mine has been misused watching the process of this trial.
Interestingly, now that it looks like it will be hard times for Cheney, the NY Times finally decides to show a softer side of the man:

Let's remember Wilson outed Plame first
David Frum reminds us what the point is:
Can you our readers find any example of denunciations of Richard Armitage's leak of Valerie Plame's name by a) Democratic officeholders or b) MSM columnists or c) left-wing bloggers? I did some Google searching this evening and came up pretty much blank.
So here's the paradox: We hear on the one hand that this leak represents a cloud over the vice presidency - a scandal - a threat to national security - possible grounds for impeachment. And then on the other hand: not one word of condemnation of the person who actually did the leaking!
Here is David Corn of the Nation, who along with Michael Isikoff broke the Armitage story, grudgingly trying to avoid acknowledging the glaringly obvious :

Happy Fitzmas to the Libs
Hope you're feeling good. That nothing quite like that special schadenfreude feeling.
The pursuit of justice by an overzealous special prosecutor is a wonderful thing. Finally, justice for the Clinton years.
Been gone all day - heard the news early afternoon on Rush - can't say I'm surprised except by the high number of guilty counts, as the jury questions of recent days indicated that a guilty verdict was coming.
I'll post on the verdict when I've caught up on the details.
Still catching up, but here's a tidbit to chew on:
"The trial has demystified the priestly practices of Washington journalism," said Roy Peter Clark, a senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, a school and resource center for working journalists. "I think we'll see prosecutors going after journalists more often."And it couldn't happen to a nicer group of people.
Of course, the priestly practices of Washingtonian journalists - and their biases - have long been evident to people in the blogosphere. Although it's true that this trial made the practices of several members of the profession of journalism a complete laughing stock.
More: from the inimitable David Shuster of Hardball fame.
as Libby was leaving, MSNBC's David Shuster called out, "Mr. Libby, are you willing to go to jail to protect Vice President Cheney?"What a ghoul.
Still more from Byron York:
Libby juror Denis Collins on CNN's Larry King Live:Q: Are you going to write about this?
A: I am going to write about it. I'm not sure of the format or where it will be…

Aussies, Brits and Frenchmen Who Love America!
Amidst all the media doom and gloom and the vitriolic commentary coming from the America-hating left, it's easy to forget that our nation is still a beacon of light to much of the world. With that in mind, a few examples of people from other nations showing such appreciation may be in order.
Via AFP (linked at Drudge) came this great photo from down under. It shows Australians expressing their appreciation not only for Vice-President Dick Cheney (in Sydney to meet with Prime Minister John Howard, who many of us Americans absolutely adore in return), but for America. As someone with a fair amount of Australian relatives, I just have to say, good on ya, mates!
