Soneone with lots of money and familiarity with hedge funds seems to be manipulating oil futures. Someone with a similar profile manipulated the electronic markets predicting the election, the week before the election. Hmmm, I wonder who that could be . . . . and is there any way to find out for sure?UPDATE: More.

Yet more morning after musings
The 7-11 coffee-cup poll:"Our popular vote was absolutely right on," Jim Keyes, the chain's head honcho, told the Dallas Morning News. "We sell a million cups of coffee every day, so our sample size was huge."I wonder why I never got this chain email about Texas seceding if Kerry won. I'm from Texas and I am still on a huge Austin listserv. Well, anyway, it's a cute chain email.

More morning after musings
Maps showing the Democratic/Republican split by population rather than area. States and counties are resized to show population density, which makes the maps look weird, but give a vividly visual understanding of what the electorate did on Tuesday. A good corrective to the overwhelmingly red county map, with more information than this also good map.More stats:

How not to win hearts and minds
Depressed New Yorkers muse on the bigoted dumbness of the heartland. Bewildered San Franciscans and Portlandians muse on the bigoted dumbness of the heartland. Some of them rouse themselves from their grief to protest against bigoted dumbness too. Some of them apologize for not convincing swing voters that they are anything but losers. The Democrats pout.Us Bush voters - especially us non-Republican, non-conservative Bush voters - have tons of advice for you once your week of shiva is over.

A lazy Wednesday evening election mop-up
Karol says:Young people don't vote. They have never voted. They will never vote. Even when you threaten them with death. Even when Eminem makes a 'cool' video about it. Even when they're lied to and told that they'll get drafted. Counting on the young vote (or, really, 'new' voters of any age) is just about the worst strategy for any campaign. How about all these Kenyon College students standing for hours in the rain last night?

Relieved. Exhausted.Spent all afternoon and early evening in Hackensack NJ calling voters and watching nerve-wracking TV pundits, along with my friend of the Command Post essays and several other Bushie New Yorkers I had rounded up to help. Greetings from the Antipodes!
GOOOOOOOOD Morning America!!!!!!!!!!!!Murray, every time a pollster says this election will be a squeaker, I think about what a fine example Australia set for us, and I breathe a bit easier.Today you get to decide if you want to be like Spain or Australia.
Try not to fuck it up please, it's not a trick question.
Volunteering helps too. Back to Hackensack today, to make phone calls, give little old ladies rides, and hand out lit.
Speaking of which, go vote today. Even if you don't live in a swing state.

Correction
Hitchens actually is endorsing Bush.An email from Christopher Hitchens to my friend Ron Radosh indicates that Hitchens's comments on the election in Slate, which we posted here, were actually intended as an edorsement of Bush not Kerry as the editors indicated. When my daughter first sent me the Hitchens comments I told her they didn't look like an endorsement of Kerry to me, but then she sent me the Slate headline which indicated that they were. Now the record is clear. Hitchens is voting for Bush.Sorry, Andrew.

Pre-election whining
I wondered when some aggrieved protestor was going to start whining about Bush campaigning in "blue" states. After all, in September many of them expressed the opinion that Republicans were not welcome in New York (as though there were no Republicans here to begin with), and at the March 2003 antiwar march, they yelled at us Protest Warriors, "Get off our streets!" (as though we didn't pay NYC tax for infrastructure maintenance).Today in Minneapolis:
Several dozen Kerry supporters protested Bush's appearance on the sidewalks across from Target Center, noting that Minneapolis is traditionally Democratic territory. "You just can't come to Minneapolis," said Shane Kinney. "It's our city - it's not OK for Bush to come here and ask for more votes. It's our city."Mommy, it's not faaaaiiiiirrrr!
