About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Happy Holidays from Hamas: Crucifixion OK'd as Punishment in Gaza

I suppose the Jews forced them into this: the tradition-minded legislators of Gaza reached way back into the annals of jurisprudence to find appropriate censure for some crimes. As filtered through various sources and finally mentioned on Solomonia:

Hamas members of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza have approved a new bill "to implement Koranic punishments," including hand amputation, crucifixion, corporal punishment and execution.

It's nice to see Hamas finds the old Roman ways worth emulating. What's next, reading chicken entrails and speaking Latin?

When Hamas does crucify someone, I wonder what kind of play it will in the mainstream press. "Ancient Penalty Reflects New Strictures Imposed by Israel" sounds about right.

Outing Arafat

The inimitable Mark Steyn on a late unlamented thug:

Jonah, that Arafat-died-of-Aids story is “no shocker” to you, and pretty much an open secret in diplomatic circles. I’m in Madrid at the moment, and it prompted many knowing chortles among political types I mentioned it to today, along with fond reminiscences about Yasser’s corps of hunky blond Scandinavian bodyguards - an odd bunch of chaps to find in Ramallah, but presumably they were doing the jobs Palestinians won’t do.

Yet this revelation no doubt came as news to most of the late Father of his Country’s citizenry. So it will be interesting to see the impact of this revelation on Fatah’s already collapsed standing. When Ahmad Jibril announces “to every honorable member of the Fatah movement that he should be happy that we got rid of the plague, which had been imposed upon them and upon the Palestinian people”, I would assume he knows whereof he speaks. If you were a Hamas publicity guy and you wanted to deliver the coup de grace to a regime of unloved secular kleptocrats, outing them as promiscuous gay secular kleptocrats would seem to be the perfect move.

Key Theological Dispute Drives Wedge Into Hamas

September 1, 2007: Tarnishing its image as the most unstoppable military force since the Wermacht rolled over France, Hamas has been thrown into an uproar as Gaza has splintered into at least 10 different zones in the wake of a ferocious theological dispute.

Heads and fatwas were flying off the rooftops this past week as different factions vied to prove which one hates Jews more. While Westerners were baffled by the contentions, sources told us "this is a super important matter. Whoever hates the Jews the most gets major props in Gaza, right up there with having the sharpest ski mask."

Initially, after crushing Fatah in the June coup, Hamas displayed a fairly uniform level of homicidal intent toward Jews. In the following weeks, however, sharp differences appeared. At first, varying levels of foaming rage led to a north-south split, with Original Hamas in the northern Gaza and New Original Hamas setting up shop in the south.

But the disputations raged until the ever-changing map of Gaza looked like the inside of Arafat's medicine cabinet.

Gaza Year Zero: Khmer Rouge With Korans

I wanted to give Hamas the benefit of a doubt. Despite differences of opinion on Israel policy issues, I accepted the argument that the group primarily wanted to reform Palestinian territories, be rid of the corrupt Fatah adminstrators, set up social welfare programs, speak truth to the power of American/imperialist hegemonistic ambitions, protect the environment and all living creatures, support healthy lifestyles and encourage moral behavior. Everything sounded so right.

In fact, I viewed Hamas very much the way a clear-sighted U.S. journalist described another reformist group, or at least one of the group's leaders. According to Powerlineblog, the journalist wrote that the man was

a "French-educated intellectual" who wanted nothing more than "to fight against feudal privileges and social inequities."

Wow, that kind of resume would play well at the Iowa Democratic caucuses.

Unfortunately, the journalist misunderestimated the kind of fight the group had in mind. The writer was Sydney Schanberg, the group was the Khmer Rouge.

After everything I've read about Gaza this week, the killing fields sounds like a possible template for the social evolution of Gaza.

In Fact, You ARE a Jew

The atrocities and statements coming out of Gaza are stomach-turning, but not surprising. Even those whose celebrate suicide bombings (by others) have no desire to die. At the last moment, they act like rational beings who want to prolong life. However, some of them combine the will to exist with poisonous hatred of Jews. That hatred breaks through even as they struggle to keep alive -- they can't stop thinking about Jews.

I thought about this when I read the account of one more death in Gaza, from the London Telegraph:

Among yesterday's dead was a 14-year-old boy and three women, all killed in a Hamas attack on a Fatah security officer's home.

"They're firing at us, firing RPGs, firing mortars. We're not Jews," the brother of Jamal Abu Jediyan, a Fatah commander, pleaded during a live telephone conversation with a Palestinian radio station.

Minutes later both men were dragged into the streets and riddled with bullets.

You're wrong. You ARE a Jew. Tell me, from whatever version of the World to Come you now inhabit, what does it feel like?

The Legend of "Stonewall" Abbas: From the Annals of the Palestinian Civil War Reenactment Society

August 1, 2011: When Johnny Jihadi, Billy Burkha and Bobby Wahabi squared off in the Palestinian Civil War, they created a bloody time of legends, when men did brave deeds in the tragic fight of brother against brother, secular Jew-hater vs. religious Jew-hater. And shining most brightly in the Palestinian Pantheon is General Mahmoud "Stonewall" Abbas, the greatest military mind ever produced by the Palestinians.

In this new report from the annals of the Palestinian Civil War Reenactment Society, we discuss the truth behind the legend of Stonewall Abbas.

It began in the uneasy summer of 2007, when Hamas and Fatah were still on relatively good terms, with some raised voices and wagging fingers but nothing to get excited about. But then . . .

Annals of the Palestinian Civil War Reenactment Society

July 1, 2010 -- The first meeting of the Palestinian Civil War Reenactment Society will now come to order.

Thank you, Mr. Secretary. First, let me say how excited we are at the great turn-out at this organizational meeting. We know how challenging it can be to get together to reenact the Civil War while it's taking place, but we suspected that a substantial number of people would want to take part in this exciting activity.

And what amazing activities we have planned. This civil war reenactment society is going to, so to speak, kick a little tushy.

Robert Novak opens mouth, swallows propaganda

In his recent column in the Washington Post, Robert Novak's credulity toward his Palestinian tour guides, rehearsal of discredited tropes and total lack of curiousity about the other side of the story is a painful example of the cliche that "lies run around the world before truth gets out of bed and puts on its shoes." Let us count the ways.

Brit Tzedek V'Shalom doesn't impress LA shul

Allyson Rowen Taylor of Stand With Us attended a speech by one of the leaders of Brit Tzedek V'Shalom at Valley Beth Shalom Synagogue, one of the largest in the LA area and pulpit of author Rabbi Harold Shulweis. BTvS promotes the Baker-Hamilton Report, sponsors "Combatants for Peace" (which we wrote about here) and holds Israel responsible for everything that happens to the Palestinians (being a classic case of Richard Landes' Masochistic Omnipotent Syndrome). But their positions are even more ridiculous than I thought.

Allyson's report (via email) is emotional but contains some facts:

Training Up the Next Generation of Soldier Bots

Instilling young Palestinian children with their parents' ideals on Hamas children's tv. Instead of Sesame Street, this is what they get.

Watch a four-year-old girl sings about the glories of her mother, female suicide bomber Reem Riyashi.

Imagine coming from a culture where maternal self-sacrifice means not how much one's mother was prepared to do to to help her children; but, rather, that she considered taking care of her children of lesser importance than blowing herself up while killing a few enemies.

Now there's a life lesson no shrink will be able to overcome.

And there's a whole generation being trained up to think this way. These are now "Palestinian values."

Golda Meir's words are as relevant now as the day they were first spoken: “We will have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us.”

That goal is not yet in sight.

The latest "hard line": Israel has the right to exist

Associated Press headline: Israel Affirms Hard Line on Palestinians

What's the hard line?

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday peace talks with the Palestinian coalition government would be impossible as long as it refuses to renounce violence and recognize Israel's right to exist. . . . "We can't have contact with members of a government that justifies resistance, or in other words, terror," Olmert said, according to meeting participants.

Harsh.

Here is the generous peace deal Olmert is taking a hard line on:

Moronic Convergence Alert

Hugo Chavez rolls out the red carpet for Hamas.

The Hamas Movement on Wednesday received an official invitation to visit Caracas during a meeting in Tehran between visiting Venezuelan foreign minister Nicolas Maduro and a Hamas delegation. Dr. Mousa Abu Marzouk, the deputy political bureau chairman of Hamas, told PIC that the Hamas delegation led by its political bureau chairman Khaled Mishaal conferred with the Venezuelan foreign minister on overall Palestinian conditions in the light of the Israeli aggressions and the western siege.

. . . Meanwhile, a source close to the Hamas Movement said that Caracas might well be one of the countries that Hamas leadership would visit within its current tour of a number of countries a bid to rally support for the Palestinian unity government.

Lovely: German Bishops Compare West Bank to Warsaw Ghetto

Of all the people in the world who ought to be careful about making insensitive remarks comparing Jews to Nazis, you think high among them would be German Catholic religious leaders. Unfortunately that is not the case.

Yad Vashem lambasted a group of visiting German Catholic bishops on Tuesday for comparing the situation in the Palestinian territories with the Holocaust, calling the contentious remarks "political exploitation and demagoguery" and a gross distortion of history.

The sharp condemnation ... followed reports in the German press of comparisons made by senior German bishops between conditions in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II and current conditions in Ramallah, resulting from Israeli military activities.

"The remarks illustrate a woeful ignorance of history and a distorted sense of perspective," Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev wrote in a Tuesday letter to Cardinal Karl Lehmann, who led the Conference of German Catholic Bishops on a 10-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Where Are the Israelis?

Those of us who have written countless opeds and blog posts trying to push Israeli strength only to witness its continued weakness will find expression for their frustration in the words of Dr. Steve Carol:

...Where are the Israelis? Where are Israeli citizens out demonstrating en masse - tens of thousands in every city - banging pots and pans, shouting, "The government must go"? Where is a nationwide strike to force the government to step down? Where are the massive calls for reforms to be made, for a sound policy voiced, and for Israel to return to the image, status and power it had at the conclusion of the Six Day War?
