Podcasting from Tel Aviv

We might have another podcast today, via Fausta, this time from Savtadotty's Soup Salon in Tel Aviv. If everything works out, it will air around noon USA EST today.

Savtadotty also responded to our podcast from Jerusalem last week.

UPDATE: Savtadotty and Noam Rotem - two American-Israelis who have both lived in Tel Aviv for a long time - talk with Fausta a bit later than predicted. You get a group of talkative creative people together to just hang out and eat soup, and it's like herding kittens. Just as we were ready to herd them into the computer room, most of them decided it was time for dinner and left. So Noam and Savta and ageing mutt Jenny and I were left. If you listen about half-way through you can hear Jenny growling at the mention of Ehud Olmert.

Kitesurfing in Tel Aviv

Mary had a conversation with a cute kitesurfer on the Tel Aviv beach (all Israeli guys are cute - except for politicians - so that is a redundant adjective). She looked up kite-surfing on Wikipedia, but I have a demo video, from a kitesurfer in the Haifa harbor.

Watch him wipe out at the end, after attempting a twist.

Mary, Steve and Judith relax at a roadside cafe off Rt 85, on our way to the Golan from Haifa. You can see Lake Kinneret in the distance.

Pesach chocolate for the IDF

(Via Daled Amos) You can donate chocolate to Israeli soldiers through Standing Together.

IDF provides Matzah and wine, who brings the Pesach chocolate? Only one organization - Standing Together. After all the Matzah is eaten, the four cups are gone and the songs sung, we all somehow find room for a piece of Pesach chocolate. Standing Together, an organization increasing the morale of Israeli Soldiers, is launching a new initiative for Pesach bringing Kosher L’Pesach chocolate to soldiers on active duty when the rest of the country is on vacation. Although most of Israel sees Pesach as a time to spend with family and friends, taking trips and visiting people, many young men and women are hard at work protecting our borders. Email info@stogether.org to learn more about the activities helping soldiers who are helping us.

All year long, Standing Together brings friendly faces, hot pizza and holiday treats to the Chayalim who are out guarding our territories, landmarks and borders. Especially during holiday time, guard duty can be very lonely. Imagine the joy when a lonely soldier receives a Purim Package, a Jelly Donut for Chanukkah or a New Years greeting written by a child far away.

Standing Together has trucks outfitted with pizza ovens, coffee machines, and snack kiosks ready to drive to all of the checkpoints manned by Israeli Soldiers. Visitors from all over the world are invited to join Standing Together volunteers and bring a hot delicious smile to the faces of these often neglected soldiers.

Back when Israel was fashionable

Barbra Streisand interviews Golda Meir at some Hollywood tribute to Israel on its 30th anniversary in 1978. Then Barbra gives Hatikvah the Streisand diva treatment. This was not too long after Munich and Entebbe, and before Oslo, and the international demonization of Israel was gathering force but hadn't yet gone mainstream. Palestinian claims were either invisible or stigmatized by the violent actions taken to achieve them. Can you imagine this gala happening today?

"Inform the Jewish People That You in Israel Will Have No Problems.

Haaretz tells the riveting story of how Russian politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the poster boy for anti-Semitism in his country, acknowledged his Jewish roots by discovering the grave of his father Wolf Eidelshtein -- in Israel. Zhirinovsky has long denied the rumors, but now he's talking about the truth and his feelings for Israel, in the article "The Jewish Side of the Family." With Zhirinovsky playing an increasingly larger role in the Russian Duma, those feelings matter.

Zhirinovsky, born in Alma-Ata, Khazakstan, last saw his father when he was only two months old.

"For my whole life I searched for my father," he says. "I didn't know what happened to him. I sent requests to the Red Cross, asking them to locate my father. I tried to look for him in Western Europe and I even contacted people in the United States. But in vain. The only place I didn't try, for some reason, was Israel."

Here's one of many eye-opening quotes in the story, from a master of the pithy quote:

"Inform the Jewish people that if I am elected president or if I am in the government, you in Israel will have no problems, not with Iran's nuclear program and not with the Hamas terrorists. I will know how to deal with them. After all, my father is buried here, in your soil."

If this story is accurate and Zhirinovsky gains more power, what might the implications be for Russia's relations with Israel and Arab states? How will Arab governments relate to an aggressive Russian leader who's proud of his Jewish roots? Might Zhirinovsky swing from being an anti-Semitic crank to a pro-Semitic crank?

I have no idea. But in the mean time, welcome to the tribe, tovarishch.

Israel and the Arabs: Compare and contrast

Two sequential posts from Augean Stables:

First, turns out a lot of Sudanese Muslim refugees from Darfur want to settle in Israel. And Israel, true to form, is agonizing over how many it can reasonably take in (based not on ethnic demographics, just resources), with Israeli human rights groups going to bat for the Sudanese.

The second post is about the Arab League's position on Darfur, which is a typical mix of denial and complicity and scapegoating.
From the subscriber-only WSJ article:
