Mean Ms. Treater
We all know that Ms. Magazine turned down a simple, dignified ad about women leaders in Israel, looking down its collective perky upturned nose at the filthy Jewish lucre proffered it by the American Jewish Congress. Ms. threw out a convoluted explanation of its action, which is not even worth a summary. The dust-up does, however, enable me to write that Mean Ms. Treater headline, a reference to a classic early song by Grand Funk Railroad.
I started thinking, if Ms. is so rich and successful these days that it doesn't need Jewish advertising, I wonder what magazines might happily welcome this or similar Israel ads? Herewith, my dream media schedule. Something tells me all these publications would prove a staunch friend of Israel or, at a minimum, a glad recipient of AJCongress advertising funds. Ad reps, start your dialing:

Death to Kapos (!?)
I'm not one to click on banner ads, but an ad on Israel Insider made me pause, do a double take and then click. You find the ad on top of comments on stories, so I can't link to it. But the text says:
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR KAPOS WHO CARVE UP THE JEWISH CAPITAL.
Clicking the link goes to the website of One Jerusalem. In contrast to the inflammatory ad, I didn't see anything on the well-done site calling for executions of Jewish politicians. So in one sense I was relieved and felt that the headline was more of a gruesome tease than a policy direction. The site says this:
Israel has upheld its moral and ethical obligations to the people of the world and has earned the right to retain sovereignty over all of Jerusalem, according to the present boundaries. Israel's decision, as a free and democratic nation, to designate a united and undivided Jerusalem as its capital, should be respected and recognized by the entire international community.
That's a position that's reasonable and free of berzerker overtones. But still . . . death to kapos?
By the way, in assembling this entry I learned that a website exists called www.kapos.org. Horrifying, you think, a sick joke. No, it's simply the website of the Kentucky Association of Pep Organization Sponsors. Could this be the most unfortunate acronym ever? To be clear, here's what KAPOS has to say for itself:
KAPOS was formed 52 years ago for the purpose of promoting and improving the art of cheerleading. Goals of cheerleading include leading the fans in an organized manner and encouraging teams to perform to their maximum potential, and hopefully win. Good sportsmanship and strong school spirit are essential elements in attaining these goals.

Israel, Syria, and Iran
Two weeks after an Israeli airstrike against something or other in Syria, Israeli President Shimon Peres suddenly feels all warm and fuzzy toward the Syrians. Here's Ha'Aretz
"I do believe the nervousness in the relationship between Syria and ourselves is over," Peres told foreign journalists. "Why go back to rumors and speculation when we say clearly we are ready to negotiate directly with the Syrians for peace."... Meanwhile, another indication that tensions with Syria have quieted somewhat is the fact that the Israel Defense Forces have announced that a round of officer appointments, suspended due to the rise in tensions, would resume. The appointments were halted about a month before the September 6 incident, due to fears of a possible war with Syria during the summer.
Commentary. As you know, I'm not any kind of Middle East expert, so what follows here is my strictly amateur analysis. Now we all know that there's been a lot of talk in the last couple of years about a Syrian/Iranian strategic alliance, which would make sense, because neither of those countries has very many friends left in the Middle East. Consequently, there's been speculation on the US/Israeli side about the desirability of trying to weaken the alliance by making peace overtures to Syria in order to woo it away from the Iranian orbit.
The debate within Israel has been between the camp that says "Iran or no Iran, Syria is our enemy - we'd be nuts to negotiate with them"; and the side that says "One thing at a time - Iran is Public Enemy Number One, and we need to keep them from establishing a beachhead on our borders."
So what has just happened is that Israel has taken Syria to the woodshed and whipped it like a naughty schoolboy. Then, to add insult to injury, they've publicly humiliated the Assad regime by saying, "... Oh, you were saying something about peace talks? Let's talk peace."
I think there's a message for everybody here:
For Syria: You are our bitches.
For Iran: Your so-called allies in Syria are useless to you. We can strike any point in Syria at any time. You are alone.
For the Israelis: This is what we mean when we talk about negotiating from a position of strength. We know you think your government are a bunch of wimps, but we do know what we're doing. When we say "let's negotiate with the Syrians", we're not talking about giving away the farm - so don't take us for fools. Our focus must be on prying Syria away from Iran, and that's what we're doing.
And it might be working. Here's Stratfor:
Most intriguing are the reports we have received from Lebanon claiming that a serious division has opened up in the leadership of Hezbollah over the prospect of Syria working out a peace agreement with Israel. To even hear of a division within Hezbollah over the subject is startling, let alone the fact that the group is taking the possibility of a peace treaty seriously.Israel periodically raises the possibility of a peace settlement with Syria, usually not all that sincerely, so Peres' comment is not completely strange. The report on Hezbollah taking this seriously is more interesting, but remember that rumors always flow in Lebanon, and this one may not be true -- or Hezbollah is simply getting itself bent out of shape.
The report goes on to speculate on the possible role of Turkey, raising the possibility that something was entering Syria from Turkey "that the Israelis didn't want arriving" and noting that the Turkish government is interested in seeing Syria and Israel negotiate.

How to get from Israel to Iran
Department of "Things that make you go hmmmmm."
4-Mile Creek says, "If I were going to attack Iran . . . . "
. . . . If the Israelis were to disguise their airplanes, and fly in there sometime around 2000 hrs, then capture the airfield personnel, it would be several hours before anyone knew something was going on. Even with the Royal Saudi Land Forces barracks just down the road in the main part of KKMC, it would be several hours after that before the Royal Saudi forces could mount an attack. With only one easily defended road from KKMC to KKMC airfield, it wouldn't be that hard for the Israelis to beat off an attack. It would then be at least six or seven hours (and more likely 24 hours) after that before any sort of Saudi reserve ground force could be mustered from outside of KKMC and brought to bear. As with the airfield, there is only one road into KKMC proper (it's the road visible coming into KKMC from the left), and it wouldn't be too tough for a light battalion to control that high-speed avenue of approach for at least another several hours. All total, the Israelis would have anywhere from 12 to 24 hours to use a well stocked, well built airfield from which their F-15s would be able to be refueled, re-armed and launched to strike nearly anywhere in Iran. Israeli F-16s could fly CAPs over the airfield to deter any Royal Saudi Air Force response coming up from PSAB, and even if the RSAF did attack, their training is mostly in air-to-air combat, not air-to-dirt bombing in support of a ground attack. Add in a few SHORAD sites around the airfield, and the RSAF would likely not affect much of the fighting on the ground.
After using it for maybe a day, the Israelis could load up and quickly cross into Iraqi airspace and hotfoot it home at low level.
Read the whole thing. Hmmmmm.

Ahoy, A New Human Rights Whale
I took a look at the websites of Amnesty USA and Human Rights Watch today and guess what? No Israel on the home pages! I almost plotzed with surprise.
Could it be that such groups have thrown so many harpoons at Israel over the years that they have decided that a new whale might be a juicier target (and one better suited for fundraising)? Amnesty features Darfur with home-page highlights on China, Mexico, the US, India, and Iran.
Human Rights Watch, meanwhile, gives China's Olympic crackdown big play, along with items on Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and South Africa (for the murder of lesbians). Overall, China is looking like the new Moby Dick.
I wonder if the civil war in Gaza finally made it ludicrous to come down on Israel all the time when the truly egregious human rights violations are going on in full view in Gaza.
I'm sure Israel will get back on the home pages, but for now I'll grant these groups some respect for hurling their harpoons at some big bad whales and leaving the minnow alone.

DC Fantasy: Gays Storm Jihadi Love Fest!
Stand With Us got a busload of folks together yesterday to attend the spirited pro-Israel counterdemonstration in Washington, to irritate the United For Peace & Justice crowd that showed up at the Capital.
This Jerusalem Post article gives a good overview of the day.
The Israel group numbered 200-300, not a bad showing, while the anti-Israel crowd was 3,000 to 5,000. But the BIG crowd, with the hard bodies, hot music and fun in the sun, was definitely at the Capital Pride Festival held in the very same area. The festival had terrific music -- I heard all-lesbian band Wicked Jezebel tear the stage apart playing "Barracuda" by Heart.

The highlight of the day came at the end, when the pro-Israel bunch lined Consititution Ave. while the anti-Israel bunch stomped by with their signs. A line of DC riot police, some on horseback and motorcycles, kept the snarling, snapping pro-Palis away from our hardy band, and a good thing, since they exhibited all the violent, spitting proclivities typical to large assemblies of their sort (I've seen them in action before, during the 2004 Republican convention in NYC). Fortunately, no physical violence happened.
And then I had my brilliant idea for the day.

Cinnamon Stillwell: N. CA Representative for Campus Watch
Having spent the last five years as a political columnist and more recently, a blogger, I've now decided to further my involvement in the battle of ideas. In particular, the one raging on American college campuses and most especially, Mideast studies. At this critical juncture in history, it's imperative that the next generation receive an accurate, unbiased education in this most crucial of subjects. To that end, I'm happy to announce that starting April 1, I'll be the Northern California Representative for Campus Watch.

An Open Letter to Members of "Breaking the Silence"
Steve Erlanger - the Jerusalem bureau chief of the NYTimes - has a cavalier and condescending attitude toward the nation he is supposed to be reporting on, as evidenced by his statements at this media conference and his recent piece for the front page of the Times called Children of the Intifada, which was thoroughly fisked here by Prof. Richard Landes, who examines media manipulation at the blogs Second Draft and Augean Stables.
On Wednesday Erlanger defended his work on a radio show, followed by a critique by Landes. (You can listen here. Start at 32 min.) Landes' subsequent description of the show is accurate: Erlanger ends up agreeing with the hosts' critiques, while making weak excuses for Palestinian mendacity and for leaving pertinent facts out of his article. The overall impression is of someone out of his depth, unaware of same, and not caring a whole lot.
In today's Times Erlanger brings his obtuseness to bear on Breaking the Silence, a group which collects stories of malfeasance by IDF soldiers against Palestinians, and then the soldiers tour around college campuses and synagogues testifying to their misdeeds. A related group Combatants for Peace pairs an IDF soldier with a supposedly reformed Palestinian terrorist who demonstrate how peace can be achieved when the Israeli confesses his misdeeds and the Palestinian agrees with him. Such a pair were on the panel of the talkback after the Rachel Corrie play I attended in November, and you can hear their shpiel in the audio files in that post.
(I don't doubt that some IDF soldiers do bad things, which should be brought to light and stopped. But there is plenty of evidence that most of them - like our soldiers - do good things, which the BtS and CfP confessors don't mention. So the calculated effect of the project is misleading propaganda. In Jewish law, we call this loshon hora.)
I have solicited a post by our newest contributor Robert Friedman, who served in the IDF, on the IDF's rules of engagement and procedures for reporting and judging and punishing violations of same. In the meantime, I want to direct your attention to this petition for IDF vets, with 1100 signatures to date. I have reproduced their statement below, because I want to make sure people read it. If you have the opportunity to attend any BtS event, please consider photocopying the statement and distributing it to attendees. Please send the URL to Erlanger and his bosses, so they can actually engage in the "even-handedness" they profess, by printing it or interviewing some of the people who signed it.

Faking the Silence
From our newest co-blogger, Robert Friedman:
Breaking the Silence is led by a young, sincere-sounding media hound who, in a presentation at Columbia University several months ago that I attended, claimed to be the only one in Israel speaking about military/ethical issues. What utter self-righteous & self-important nonsense - even if it is lapped up by Israel's detractors.
Below is a letter I just sent to the NY Times re: today's article by Steve Erlanger.

Zombie Captures San Francisco "Antiwar" Protesters in all their Glory
As expected, the streets of San Francisco were home to the usual bizarre assortment of "antiwar" protesters this past weekend. What that actually translated into were communists, pro-terrorists, Jew-haters, 9/11 conspiracists, acid-casualties from the 60s, brainwashed college students, a sea of bloody (literally) Palestinian flags, Che tattoos, lots of skin, and a few genuine, if confused, pacifists. And the America-hating "textbook" soon to be used in San Francisco public school classrooms, "Addicted to War," also made an appearance. As has been the pattern for the past few years, a group of brave counter-protesters showed up too.
The inimitable zombie parodies the lunacy of the local left with the usual revealing photos and clever commentary. Click here to venture down the rabbit hole...

Deep Inside the Mind of IDF Intelligence
Michael Totten has a long, mesmerizing Q&A with an IDF intelligence officer over at his blog. I can't summarize it, but it ranges widely, with pictures, too! Here is one comment from his IDF source, on defining what Israel gained from last summer's war:
But there are other sides to the coin. I think Hezbollah's leadership and the Iranians take Israel a little more seriously now. They did not agree to end the hostilities for no reason. Nasrallah himself said he did not expect that kind of backlash. I believe they have a different image of Israel now. They saw the way we handle the territories -- where we tense up over every soldier that gets hurt -- and they made sure we would know they're waiting for us in south Lebanon, and that it is going to be costly to send ground forces in there. But this was not the territories -- tanks were getting hit all over the place, there were some very costly battles -- and Israel seemed like it could go on for a while. If you ask me, that is the truest victory. Apparently Hezbollah and the Iranians thought rocket barrages on Northern Israel would weaken us - the opposite was true.

Lovely: German Bishops Compare West Bank to Warsaw Ghetto
Of all the people in the world who ought to be careful about making insensitive remarks comparing Jews to Nazis, you think high among them would be German Catholic religious leaders. Unfortunately that is not the case.
Yad Vashem lambasted a group of visiting German Catholic bishops on Tuesday for comparing the situation in the Palestinian territories with the Holocaust, calling the contentious remarks "political exploitation and demagoguery" and a gross distortion of history. The sharp condemnation ... followed reports in the German press of comparisons made by senior German bishops between conditions in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II and current conditions in Ramallah, resulting from Israeli military activities.
"The remarks illustrate a woeful ignorance of history and a distorted sense of perspective," Yad Vashem Chairman Avner Shalev wrote in a Tuesday letter to Cardinal Karl Lehmann, who led the Conference of German Catholic Bishops on a 10-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.
