Mitzrayim to Ge'ulah, speedily and in our days

sederplate.jpg Chag Sameach from Treppenwitz, who uses his Pesach greeting post to link to just about every Jewish blog there is. So bookmark it for after the holiday. He also publishes a prayer for captives:

May the One Who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, David and Solomon, bless the kidnapped and captive soldiers, including among them Gilad ben (the son of) Aviva Shalit; Ohed ben Malka Goldwasser; Eldad ben Tova Regev; Guy ben Rina Hever, Ron ben Batya Arad; Yekutiel Yehuda Nachman ben Sarah Katz; Tzvi ben Penina Feldman; and Zecharia Shlomo ben Miriam Baumel. May the Holy One, Blessed be He, watch them and save them from all trouble and oppression and from all evil and injury.

May He be filled with mercy for them, to cause them to recover and to heal them, to strengthen them and to invigorate them, and to bring them speedily to freedom, to return to the embrace of their families. May they merit long lives and years of much strength and peace. In the merit of our forefathers, may the descendants be saved and fulfill through them the verse, 'Release my soul from imprisonment to praise Your Name' (Psalms 142:8), swiftly and soon, and let us all say Amen.

Treppenwitz quotes from a Hebrew prayer for the redemption of captives, often sung to a stirring melody - mp3 and lyrics below.

Psychology Today Prints Asher Abrams' Letter

Late last year, I was interviewed for a Psychology Today article on political ideology and transformation titled "The Ideological Animal," which appeared in the January/February issue.

While I felt that the article treated my story of post-9/11 left-to-right political transformation fairly, I disagreed strongly with the author, Jay Dixit's, take on what inspires such political shifts. In short, Dixit implied that they are motivated purely by "irrational fears," including a fear of death, and he cited several highly suspect and blogosphere-debunked studies to make his point. I blogged about my concerns here, as well as linking to the many other bloggers (and one Pajamas Media "Sanity Squad" podcast) that covered the subject here.

Cathy Siepp

[ UPDATE: The longest tribute from her good friend Amy Alkon. ]

So I read that Cathy Siepp is dying of lung cancer, from a post by her daughter on Cathy's blog. Maybe the last post ever on that blog.

Wretchard writes that he "met her once, and briefly at the Pajamas Media kickoff in New York City. She had a glass of wine in her hand and a smile on her face."

I was there too and I met Cathy like that. She also wore a slinky black pants suit. We didn't talk much because it was a very busy room full of bloggers and journalists schmoozing, and she and I didn't have a connection beyond my occasional visit to her blog.

At the time I had no idea she had been battling lung cancer for years. (She mentioned it in several columns but you could have missed them if you weren't keeping track of her output.)

But I have another connection to Cathy Siepp.

Zombie Captures San Francisco "Antiwar" Protesters in all their Glory

As expected, the streets of San Francisco were home to the usual bizarre assortment of "antiwar" protesters this past weekend. What that actually translated into were communists, pro-terrorists, Jew-haters, 9/11 conspiracists, acid-casualties from the 60s, brainwashed college students, a sea of bloody (literally) Palestinian flags, Che tattoos, lots of skin, and a few genuine, if confused, pacifists. And the America-hating "textbook" soon to be used in San Francisco public school classrooms, "Addicted to War," also made an appearance. As has been the pattern for the past few years, a group of brave counter-protesters showed up too.

The inimitable zombie parodies the lunacy of the local left with the usual revealing photos and clever commentary. Click here to venture down the rabbit hole...

John Derbyshire and Dangerous Women

After being AWOL yesterday, Daphne Merkin re-emerges for the last round of the Jewcy snipefest, pissed off at John Derbyshire's stiff upper British lip. First she rubs his face in some bluesy singer-songwriters (including one of my faves Lucinda Williams):

They're always caterwauling about the man that got away, the desolation of the passing scenery, the difficulty of telling the emotional truth in a strait-jacketed world: that kind of essentially adolescent angst, which I imagine leaves you unmoved. I envision you listening to Schubert or someone equally upstanding.

(Speaking of which, Daphne and John may think we are all about Torah and Zionism and Washington scuttlebutt, but according to SiteMeter this has consistently been the most popular post at this blog. Hubba hubba.)

Then - emboldened by Benjamin's latest rumination on Zionism and its discontents - Daphne declares "I am feeling particularly Jabotinskyesque tonight," and tackles John's veddy British discomfort with, um, those of the Hebraic persuasion, delivering a classy smackdown which manages to mention in passing Leftist anti-Israel Jews, WASPy "I have Jewish heritage" Jews, and Christopher Hitchens' genuine and charming politesse while refusing to grant Israel the same re-evaluation he has accorded his other previous beliefs:

Round three of Jewcy snipefest

The Jewcy snipefest plods gamely into its third day. So far, John Derbyshire grumbles, neither Matt Yglesias not Design Observer have deigned to notice this artificial exercise.

In today's installement, John tries to muster some interest in our salvo of yesterday.

Listen. mate: If you had two kids with combined ages 25, two cars with combined ages 24, no job, teeth falling out, a damp basement, a garage that needs painting, and taxes still to do in mid-March, you’d be resentful and enervated too. Whyn’t you try it? Huh? Huh?

You're right, John, all I do is blog. I have no idea how the other half lives.

Our house intellectual Benjamin Kerstein tells me he is preparing a blistering erudite rebuttal to John's mild bewilderment about Ben's Zionism, and Kesher Talk blogger Asher Abrams threatened to come out of retirement to castigate John as an antisemite. Yup, we know how to generate controversy here at Kesher Talk.

Daphne has not yet put in an appearance today, even though we have not made any jokes about spanking; I think the Jewish content of this blog makes her uncomfortable.

UPDATE: More Derbyshire, to Daphne, below. i give John kudos for trying to stay interested enough to write every day. I hope he's getting paid. I wish I were getting paid. (Mike, am I getting paid? At least 2 free tickets to something?):

Welcome Jewcy readers

Michael Weiss (no relation to either me or my brother) threw our blog into the Movable Snipe bullpen this week with James Wolcott, Matt Yglesias, Hit & Run, and Design Observer, as snipe targets for John Derbyshire and Daphne Merkin. Who seem resentful and enervated by the whole thing.

So if you want to read snipes by Merkin (who doesn't read blogs) and Derbyshire (who does blog at the Corner, one of my daily reads):
Derbyshire
Merkin
Merkin

You can also go over there and, um, engage with them.

Reason snipes back.

Daphne already thinks we are tedious neocon policy wonks, and I am going to drive the nail in the coffin of our reputation by reminding our readers that we do like Mike Weiss of Snarksmith - the instigator of this blogsnipefest - because we run into him at Christopher Hitchens debates and because he organized the Denmark Solidarity Rally, oh, just about a year ago.
We have pix and reporting of that event here, here, here, here, here, and here.
And more on the rallies in other cities: Chicago, Chicago, Toronto, San Francisco, London (with the best t-shirt)
And lots on the Motoon controversy itself here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Yes, that's how wonky we are. 20 posts on the Danish Mohammed Kartoon Kontroversy.

We are getting some traffic from this blog mashup, so what the hey.

PS We also like Nick Gillespe because he was also a fan of Steven Vincent and linked to our blogburst commemoration of the first anniversary of Vincent's murder. And we might like John Derbyshire if he gives Cryptonomicon a good review.

Free Abdul Kareem: It's not over yet

Egyptian blogger Abdul Kareem (whom we wrote about here) has been sentenced to four years in prison for writing blogposts critical of Islam and the Egyptian government.

Nick Cohen is quick to proclaim the impotence of the blogosphere in securing Kareem's release, and Richard Landes begs to differ. Not only is it too early to say how this new empowerment of the individual will affect entrenched dictatorships in general, it is even too early to tell whether the blogosphere can effect the release of Kareem. He has just entered prison. The outcry has not subsided. It's not over till it's over.

For an analysis of how the blogosphere can influence mainstream media to effect change, view Richard Fernandez' talk at the Media as Theater of War conference. For a stirring sweeping view of how the blogosphere empowers individuals, watch Benjamin Kerstein at the same conference.

Aussies, Brits and Frenchmen Who Love America!

Amidst all the media doom and gloom and the vitriolic commentary coming from the America-hating left, it's easy to forget that our nation is still a beacon of light to much of the world. With that in mind, a few examples of people from other nations showing such appreciation may be in order.

Via AFP (linked at Drudge) came this great photo from down under. It shows Australians expressing their appreciation not only for Vice-President Dick Cheney (in Sydney to meet with Prime Minister John Howard, who many of us Americans absolutely adore in return), but for America. As someone with a fair amount of Australian relatives, I just have to say, good on ya, mates!

Secular Islam Summit: The Next Islamic Enlightenment?

Having expressed the need for an Islamic reformation (or whatever its equivalent) on many occasions, I was pleased to hear about the Secular Islam Summit taking place this upcoming March 4-5 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The summit is in fact billed as the beginning of the "next Islamic Enlightenment" and according to the website:

Delegates from Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and elsewhere will address secularist interpretations of Islam, the need for Koranic criticism, the state of freedom of the expression in Muslim societies, educational reform.

Utah Shooter a Bosnian Muslim

The question I posed yesterday (updated by Judith) about the Utah mall shooter has been answered and sure enough, he's a Bosnian Muslim.

About halfway down in a report from KLS.com is this little factoid (hat tip Sweetness & Light by way of Atlas Shrugs):

A family friend, who didn't want to be identified, told us Talovic's upbringing may have played a role. He was a Muslim-Bosnian, born in war-torn Bosnia.

Another case of Sudden Jihad Syndrome? Something tells me we'll never know. The Myth of the Lone Gunman persists...

Update: Robert Spencer on Salt Lake Jihad at Frontpagemag.com.

Update II: Salt Lake City Killer Update at Little Green Footballs.

Update III: Chuck Hustmyre has written an in-depth article on the Salt Lake shooter and his possible connection to the rash of crimes perpetrated by "lone (Muslim) gunmen" for Court TV's Crime Library.

Update IV: The Byzantine Sacred Art Blog has a series of posts on Talovic's Bosnian Muslim background (his father was a member of the mujahadeen army during the Bosnian war, and much more), as well as the mainstream media's revival of the Serbian aggression/Muslim victimhood narrative in its reporting on the Salt Lake City shooting.

Update V: Investor's Business Daily has an editorial on the Salt Lake shooting and Sudden Jihad Syndrome.

The Old Jewish Quarter of Nineveh/Mosul

A blog friend emailed me this story, in which the Rabbi of the 101st Airborne Division describes his inquries into the existence of the old Jewish section of Mosul/Nineveh:

As I entered light came through the half-open roof, and I could just make out writing engraved on the walls. It was Hebrew. It was then that I knew had stumbled into the ancient synagogue of the city of Mosul-Nineveh. My heart broke as I climbed over the garbage piles that filled the room where, for hundreds of years, the prayers of Jews had reached the heavens. I realized I was probably the first Jew to enter this holy place in over 50 years. Over three-and-a half meters of garbage filled the main sanctuary, and what appeared to be the women’s section. I could barely make it out because of the filth, but there was Hebrew writing on the walls.
A lovely story about discovering traces of the past community. Read the whole thing.
