There But For the Grace of God . . .
I am following the fast decline of Lehman Brothers, which could go into bankruptcy at midnight. A few months ago I tracked the decline of Bear Stearns, whose offices I walked by daily as I entered Grand Central Terminal.
Each time I hear their names I feel a jolt, because I easily could have been working for both of them. A headhunter approached me about a web communications job at Lehman, but nothing happened. Then, between jobs two years ago, I interviewed for a proposal position at Bear. I was mildly interested, but something told me the culture didn't fit my personality, so I passed on the opportunity.
Meanwhile, the gyrations of the financial industry cast shadows around me with other associations. I owned stock in Merrill Lynch 20 years ago, when I thought it was a good buy. I sold it, can't remember when, but I regretted the sale. Now, maybe I was smarter than I thought.
With the pillars of finance quivering, I wonder at the mentality, the vision, that led to these debacles. What pursuit of wealth blinded brilliant financiers to the consequences of their actions? Did anybody at a bank or brokerage firm say "no way" to subprime mortgages and other strategies? A book exists in the culture of jump-off-the-cliff risk taking that led us to this situation. Some might point to a lack of regulation, and that's valid. I'm curious, however, in the hubris of those who believed too blindly in their theorems, hedging and a bit of the "greater fool" approach (find a greater fool to buy the lame investments), and followed the siren song of outlandish profit straight over the edge to smash their ancient firms on the rocks far below.

Hillary, Bill and Chelsea Let Their "Hair" Down
Dashed though her presidential hopes may be (for now), Hillary Clinton has bounced back nicely, judging from her jolly appearance Sunday night at the free performance of "Hair" in Central Park's Delacorte Theater. I was in the audience with friends, settling in for the 8 pm showing, when a wave of excitement stirred the crowd below me.
A celebrity sighting, I thought, immediately thinking of people like Ed Koch and Mike Tyson (instant evidence that I'm still stuck in my 1980s New York experience). The pandemonium rose even higher when everybody realized the excitement came from Hillary along with a certain tall, silver-haired man in a yellow golf shirt and a younger woman. Yes, it was Bill Clinton and Chelsea, and Hillary, the whole family and Secret Service entourage in the middle of an adoring crowd.
Bill looked relaxed, Hillary greeted well-wishers who jostled to get close to her, and the whole evening took on an air of midsummer night's dreams. Once the play started, one of the performers ran into the stands and improvised, "My mother's here!" and kissed Hillary.
Freed from the chores of running for President, Hillary & Family can kick back, relax, catch some shows, and enjoy life. I'll always remember the night we enjoyed life and "Hair" together.

iShares Poster Ads: What Were They Thinking?
Walking through the tunnels of Grand Central Terminal today, commuters see a new "Better World" ad campaign for iShares, along the theme of "see through the clouds." That's good advice for investors, to make sense of murky investment options. The text-heavy print ads are quite acceptable.
The subway posters, however, are unintentionally jarring, in a major way.
They show New York buildings through clouds that look to me much more like . . . smoke. The evidence is below; judge for yourself. With 9-11's seventh anniversary next week, the imagery is so stunningly reminiscent of photos of that day that I cannot believe somebody at iShares' agency didn't say, wait a minute, let's rethink this.

To get a rousing sense of what people are thinking, get ye to the new comments sections on some articles in the New York Times. Because the site gets a worldwide audience, the stories can get some eye-opening comments.
Case in point: Today the Times threw itself open for comments on the story, "Shootings Test Limits of New Self-Defense Law," about how a man in Texas shot and killed two illegal immigrants robbing a neighbor's home. The story says this:

NYC closets redux
The post about the Manhattan Storage ad campaign has gotten some press. The NY Sun wrote it up (without giving our URL, unfortunately), claiming correctly:
some advertising industry professionals argue that left-leaning ad campaigns are a good business strategy for New York City, which is overwhelmingly Democratic. In the 2004 presidential election, for example, 73.82% of New York City voters cast their ballots for the Democratic nominee, Senator Kerry. The director of strategy for a New York-based advertising agency, Consortium Communications, Emily Heyward, said Manhattan Mini Storage "is making certain assumptions about the political affiliations of their clientele, but those assumptions are probably correct. Their ads target young New Yorkers who don't have a lot of space. Chances are, those people will think the ads are funny and relevant."
The chief executive officer of the marketing firm Brand Communications, Brian Martin, agreed with Ms. Heyward. "In New York," he said, "these ads will delight more than they offend."
And now we've been linked by Mother Jones, which also links to a post on the topic by NYC Metrobloggers.

Weird New Ad Campaign Spotted Around New York
Manhattan Mini Storage has a new ad campaign going on NY city, to help publicize their three new locations.
I spotted the first Manhattan Mini Storage ad yesterday as, it happened, that I was strolling with two other republicans after gym.

Fortunately, my closets are not that narrow.
Noticed the second one tonight on the way back from the gym, while schlepping bags home from Fairway.
I guess they figure they are safe enough, given the demographics of NYC. But I bet some minority gets completely turned off and won't use their services.

Jewish Cultural Posters from . . . Poland?
If you're Jewish, Jewish-Polish, or even just a fan of poster art, the current exhibit in the lobby of the JCC on Amsterdam Avenue in New York is well worth a visit. Called simply "Polish Jewish Cultural Posters," the examples span the era 1945-1989 and cover movies, theatrical presentations, operas and even circuses. You'll see some familiar source materials, such as from Sholom Aleichem, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Anne Frank.
The posters are for sale, and a free exhibit guide gives an overview of everything in the show.

The Bathsheba Deadline: Fiction Straight Out of the Headlines
Political junkies looking for fiction straight out of the headlines should definitely consider gravitating towards Jack Engelhard's serial novel "The Bathsheba Deadline." It's an "Amazon Shorts" novel, which means it's published in installments and touches on real life events as they occur. Part 11 came out in October and it can be purchased, along with the previous installments, at Amazon.com for all of 49 cents each.
"The Bathsheba Deadline" is on one hand a scintillating love triangle based on the biblical story of King David, Uriah and of course, the beautiful and desirable Bathsheba. But it's also a clever and wonderfully perceptive look at modern day journalism and the post-9/11 political backdrop.

Monday 6:30 PM Actor's Workshop - be there!
If you are in the NYC area this evening (Monday), head down to the Actor's Playhouse on 7th Avenue just south of Sheridan Square, for NEWS TO ME!
Doors open at 6:30pm, show starts at 7pm.
NEWS TO ME features 5 distinctive voices in current affairs, each offering their unique take on a top story in the news – then joining together to for a rousing audience-interactive town hall meeting and the NEWS TO ME Quiz.In an era of endless “screaming heads” on cable talk shows, NEWS TO ME provides an antidote that is congenial rather than confrontational; it is about listening, laughing, and above all, it is about leaving NEWS TO ME feeling happier – and smarter! – than you came in.
If you had visited Karol's blog on Thursday, you could have helped her pick her headshot.
(I alas, have another engagement for which I already paid and of which I will miss at least 2 sessions anyway.....)

Ground Zero: Leave No One Behind
When I read that over 100 pieces of human remains had been uncovered at Ground Zero last month, my thoughts immediately turned to the WTC Families For Proper Burial. This is an organization comprised of people who lost family members in the World Trade Center on 9/11 and it's been pushing city officials to conduct a thorough forensic search of the area ever since.
After having heard from founder Diane Horning (she and her husband Kurt lost their son in the WTC), I referenced the group in a follow-up blog post to an SFGate article I'd written titled, "The Cheapening of Ground Zero."

Upper East Side wisdom
It's too soon for levity, but . . . . via email:
As some of you know, I live on York Ave. in Manhattan just six blocks north of the spot where Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle's plane crashed, so I feel I ought to say something to make sense of it all: Remember, tragic though this evening's events were, if we let them distract us from the normal business of America -- working, playing, worrying about terrorism, loving, learning -- then the Yankees will have won.

Vulnerable in Manhattan
I am sitting in my apartment on the 25th floor of a 44-story high rise apartment building near Columbus Circle. It is raining, grey and gloomy. I can see west from my windows, but it is too far away to see smoke or anything from the crash.
My apartment faces another tall building, but it is diagonally open to the northwest, and a plane could fly into the corner of my building and ignite my apartment.
I usually feel safe in this 24-hour doorman building. This spring I was emailing with another blogger who lives in another large city, who asked me if I felt safe posting the Mohammed cartoons from Denmark. His wife didn't want him to post them on his blog. I wrote that it would be very difficult for assassins to get into my apartment, but they could gun me down if they wanted to on the busy street outside my building. He replied that he lives in a fairly secluded suburban neighborhood. It would be easy for someone to find out where both of us live, but paradoxically - considering the reputation of big cities vs. the suburbs - he is more vulnerable that I am. (Of course I am more protected than many urbanites who don't live in highrise doorman buildings, and if I worked outside my home I might be in an office that isn't well-protected. Like the huge office building across the street wherein someone I had lunch with last week has his office.)

Plane crashes into 50-story apartment building in NYC
The next phase of terrorism?
A Fire Department spokeswoman, Emily Rahimi, told The Associated Press that the aircraft struck the 20th floor of the building, 524 E. 72nd St., near York Avenue. However, television reports said the aircraft hit closer to the 40th floor.Oh shit. I live in a 44-story apartment building on the West Side. There are no reports of any injuries so far, and the authorities have not said whether the aircraft was a small airplane or a helicopter.
Television views of the fire showed flames shooting out of four windows and smoke that streamed up into the sky, visible for miles. The building is a 50-story condominium that was built in 1986, The A.P. said, and has 183 apartments.

Ceremony at Police Memorial in Battery Park City
I received the following message from a 9/11 Neocons member and I thought I'd pass it on to some New Yorkers....
There will be a ceremony at the police memorial in Battery Park City on October 13. The names of 100+ police officers who fell in the line of duty will be added to this memorial. These are the "Forgotten 100"--peace officers whose sacrifice was overlooked for whatever reason over the years, and never made it to the current memorials until recently.
