The Real Nina?

The show "24" often involves traitors in the midst of CTU. The pattern began early with Jack Bauer's former lover, Nina Myers. Other moles regularly scramble the work of CTU, making me wonder, how hard could it be to identify a double agent?

Real life shows -- it must be pretty hard.

Consider the case of Nada Nadim Prouty. She got into the US on a sham marriage, climbed high on the greasy poles of the FBI and CIA, snooped around in databases, and now faces, at most, a light rap on the knuckles. Jack knew what to do with Nina, but in real life Nada's punishment is, so to speak, just a little more than nada.

Ultimate Rebranding: USSR v2.0

Today marks the 90th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution. I heard an NPR report that didn't sugarcoat the communists' bloody deeds, until it found Russians who took the Hugo Chavez line with Stalin -- wow, what a unique guy.

I've been thinking that in today's moonbat environment, President Vlad Putin should think about bringing back the brand of the USSR. He's already got a de facto milder version of it, with repression of free speech and the press and state control of industries. With some creativity, he could revive the USSR label and win wild acclaim from the West.

Think of him sitting there in the Kremlin, muttering, "Sean Penn and all the other stars go see that stuffed cabbage Chavez in Venezuela. What's he know about power? Venezuela? That place would be lost on the steppes here. Why doesn't Naomi Campbell come see me?? It's not FAIR!"

I bet a repackaged USSR could make Putin the superhip figurehead of global lefties. He's got 90 years of history to build on, to pitch to people who appreciate the implacable exercise of socialist power against capitalism and the Fascists and their boot-licking toadies.

The pitch practically writes itself: Free health care, employment, socialized management of industry, housing, abortions for everybody, friendship of peoples and protection of minority rights and cultures, stood up for the Cuban revolution against those evil capitalists in Washington who wanted to destroy Castro, Paul Robeson liked us, subsidies for artists, supported (via Communist front groups) progressives in the U.S., women's rights.

The USSR said all that and more and useful idiots in the West ate it up and asked for seconds. If Putin talks a good game, he could send Hugo packing and assume his rightful place in the vanguard of the nutroot proletariat.

He might even get invited to speak at the Democratic National Convention.

Calm Breaks Out as IFAW Hits Princeton

Islamo-Fascist Awareness Week (IFAW) got an early start last week when David Horowitz spoke at Princeton, my alma mater. While other campuses saw the usual rage and hand-wringing, the event came and went at Princeton in a rather civil tone, as far as can be discerned from the Daily Princetonian. It reported,

"I don't think there has been another religion that has made saints out of murderers, had children of age two thinking they should blow up carloads of Jews," Horowitz said.

"If you have a system of belief that controls how you live your daily life and a government that has the power to execute these things, that is a combination that will result in a totalitarian state. That is Islamo-fascism."

While listeners maintained a tense silence during Horowitz's forceful speech, the question-and-answer period that followed revealed audience members' equally powerful antagonism to his remarks.

"He was a pretty poorly chosen speaker, he wasn't even supporting the ideas of the right, and every two minutes he would change topic," said Anton Khabbaz, an associate research scholar in the molecular biology department. "He had no coherence, and he said many racist things."

A follow-up column in the Princetonian amused me with its boilerplate reference to "hate speech" and visions of diverse students reacting in a unified way (I sense a contradiction there):

Fakes on the Streets, and Where the Money Might Go

I've always found peddlers on the streets of New York aggravating. Now they are proliferating, with racks of fake bags sprouting all over Midtown with franchised similarity. Scarves, sunglasses, and fake high-end watches are also part of the mix.

Benign efforts of struggling illegal aliens to grab the gold ring to hoist themselves up to credit card and mortgage scams? Or something more ominous. This CNBC article makes me wonder about the distribution pipeline for fake goods. They come from someplace, and somebody makes money off the morons who get a thrill from buhying cheap fake goods.

While the CNBC story focuses on counterfeiting in the Tri-Border area of South America, instinct tells me that fakes are a seamless web and dollars spent on Madison Avenue go to the same place as in the Tri-Border area. Do Americans really want to finance their killers via a bargain?

How Newspapers Win Readers

Due to the hurricane, I checked the website of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, a paper I grew up reading. I saw a feature on its home page that showed how some newspapers drop the truth-to-power, no-war-for oil distance and speak in terms that appeal to their readers.

The paper has a "Support Our Military" page. It combines links to war news with pictures and greetings from home to Coastal Bend soldiers. I was very impressed by the idea, the technology and the execution. Kudos to the Caller's owner, the Scripps Newspaper Group. I hope the page translates into more business for the Caller, which helped spark my interest in journalism in the early 1970s.

Distracting the Terrorists, Part 2: MILFs v. MILF

In the annals of synchronized acronyms, the greatest pairing ever involves the Moro Islamic Liberation Front from the Philippines and, well, a type of character immortalized in the movie American Pie.

This thought struck me when I read the headline on a Jamestown Foundation report on terror in the Phllippines:

MILF Seeks Leverage as Fighting Against Abu Sayyaf and MNLF Escalates

Moro Islamic Liberation Front = MILF. What legitimate fighting force would go into battle with that acronym? Give that man a fatwa!

Then the thought hit me: The West could send an elite team of our own MILFS out to destroy MILF. But for that to happen, you need to know the alternative meaning of MILF.

Can you say Stifler's mom?

Given the worldwide family audience of Kesher Talk, I'll sidestep a specific definition, which you can find elsewhere. Let's say the concept is post-partum "Charlie's Angels."

Soundtrack for a Robot Tank Attack

Nothing gets the martial juices flowing like the prospect of robot attacks. Some recent articles about the reality of robot warriors inspired fevered comments on the sound-and-light aspects of an impressive robot offensive.

Music plays a role in the properly fearsome attack. Some schools of thought opt for fear-inducing music, such as "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath and other heavy-metal classics. I have no argument with this approach, but I wonder if thumping death-metal will really do the trick.

After all, you don't want your enemy to feel fear -- I would want my enemy to feel distracted. Here's how I'd do that.

Paranoia Strikes Deep: Did Islamists Murder Jerry Garcia?

Hearing the Grateful Dead Hour on the radio recently got me to thinking about the death of singer/guitarist Jerry Garcia in 1995. Heroin and diabetes -- rarely a sustainable lifestyle combination -- led to health woes for Garcia. According to this website,

Late in the summer of 1995, he entered Serenity Knolls, a drug rehabilitation facility in Forest Knolls, CA. While he was attempting to recover, Garcia died in his sleep of a heart attack on August 9, 1995.

Still, in light of the murder of Theo Van Gogh and threats against Salman Rushdie and the Danish cartoonists, I am beginning to wonder if Garcia perhaps was murdered by Islamists.

After all, the Dead recorded a song and album titled "Blues for Allah." What could be more dangerous than that for an artist, to refer to Allah and trip the wires of Islamists everywhere? I'm sure they listen to all forms of music just waiting for a juicy transgression on which to pounce.

Democracy Whiskey Sexy 2007

The Stuck Mojo video showcased on LGF reminded me of Dr Frank's response to the invasion of Iraq, "Democracy Whiskey Sexy." (Lyrics below)

I was going to link to an mp3 but I wasn't able to find one on the web lately, so let me recommend my Fourth of July playlist from last year, which leads off with "Democracy Whiskey Sexy" and includes more music you might not hear elsewhere, like Boxharp and Michael Hall.

Someone at LGF recommended this mashup from the Stuck Mojo site:

A Knighthood for Salman Rushdie is a Disgrace

I fully agree with certain UK Muslim leaders that a knighthood for Salman Rushie is a very bad move. So he wrote a blasphemous but unreadable book, The Satanic Verses. Big deal.

Sir Salman means nothing.

But Salman Rushdie, Lord High Executioner, now that has a nice ring to it.

“The Western world should either defend us, or change its name.”

My friend Noah Pollak has a fascinating article in the new issue of Azure recounting his recent trip to Lebanon, where he observed both hopes for democracy and Hezbollah's determination to stop it. More than anything else, what comes out of his observations is a feeling of frustrated anger at the West's failure to stand up for Lebanon's liberal reformers and against their enemies, who are our enemies. Nancy Pelosi should be in Beirut expressing solidarity for the Cedar Revolution, not making nice with the man who wants to destroy it. Unfortunately, she hates her president and her country far more than she hates murderous tyranny. Ultimately, the death of civic courage in the West does not only endanger the West itself, it endangers the world entire.

Muslim Leftists Love America, Western Leftists Hate America

As I've stressed repeatedly, one of the reasons for my post-9/11 political shift from left to right, and that of many others in the same camp, has been the Western left's attachment to anti-Americanism, even when it lands them on the same side as dictators, Islamists, and terrorists. Blinded by the sort of hatred of their own country and civilization produced by years of indoctrination in what I like to call the postcolonialist, self-loathing school of multiculturalism, today's leftists are incapable of recognizing the true threats to their own existence. Instead, they cling to familiar demons and push reactionary policies.

Infidelity Attitudes and the War on Terror

MSN Men has a long article called "French Men Don't Get Caught," about how Americans and Europeans view infidelity in marriage. What's an earthquake of emotional turmoil in the U.S. gets met, as you might expect, with a Gallic shrug by those sophisticated Europeans. Or maybe a Teutonic shrug, but that doesn't sound right, does it? The article says,

It seems no other population suffers the same magnificent anguish that we do. The Russians regard affairs as benign vices, like cigars and scotch. The Japanese have institutionalized extramarital sex through clubs and salaryman lifestyles. The French, who don't cheat as much as we thought they did, prize discretion above the occasional lie. In sub–Saharan Africa, even the threat of death by HIV hasn't created a strong taboo on cheating.

I wonder if these attitudes parallel approaches to the War on Terror. The same slams against the U.S. on infidelity -- so unnuanced! those stifling Judeo-Christian (emphasis on JUDEO) fears! -- get hurled against our approach to terror. My first response: the French and other Europeans who smile and shrug and see cheating in marriage as part of the natural social landscape will also quietly accede to bus burnings, riots and creeping Sharia as parts of their new social landscape.

When you believe in nothing absolute outside your own perceptions or needs, you can rationalize anything.

The discussion boards with the article present spirited defenses of American values, raising the point of whether infidelity attitudes reflect degrees of women's freedom in various countries to oppose men's traditional prerogatives. Take a look.

Moronic Convergence Alert

Hugo Chavez rolls out the red carpet for Hamas.

The Hamas Movement on Wednesday received an official invitation to visit Caracas during a meeting in Tehran between visiting Venezuelan foreign minister Nicolas Maduro and a Hamas delegation. Dr. Mousa Abu Marzouk, the deputy political bureau chairman of Hamas, told PIC that the Hamas delegation led by its political bureau chairman Khaled Mishaal conferred with the Venezuelan foreign minister on overall Palestinian conditions in the light of the Israeli aggressions and the western siege.

. . . Meanwhile, a source close to the Hamas Movement said that Caracas might well be one of the countries that Hamas leadership would visit within its current tour of a number of countries a bid to rally support for the Palestinian unity government.
