About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Copyright claims: the latest censorship tool

The Jihadist Formerly Known as Cat Stevens asked YouTube to remove a video wherein he expresses the wish that Salman Rushdie be burned to death, claiming copyright infringement. YouTube complied, although the video was not a pirated song or music video, but an interview on British TV in 1989. Presumable the copyright would be held by the network which produced it.

Hmmmm. Where have we seen this censorship tactic before?

Exposing the UN with YouTube

David T at Harry's Place tsked at baby-faced UNWatch activist Hillel Neuer:

My mother always used to say to me:

"There are some things you say, and other things you just think".

This is a lesson this young fellow from the pro-Israeli UN Watch has clearly not learnt.

But Neuer was obeying the first law of debate as political theater: You are not trying to change the minds of your opponent, but speaking to the bystanders, using your opponents as a foil. In that context, his original denunciation in YouTube video form, as well as the one which showed acceptable speeches in the UNHRC (posted one more time at the bottom of this post), was enormously effective. They were viewed thousands of times. The world was reminded once again in graphic terms how corrupt the UN is, and informed that there is an organization dedicated to continue reminding it.

Shire Network News interviews Neuer about his organization, his speech and its results. (Podcast) (Neuer does come across as a bit of a smartass, but in a good way.)

The Speeches NOT Banned at UN Human Rights Council

Another video of Hillel Neuer's speech before the UN Human Rights Council, showing many examples of speeches which have been accepted by and received thanks from the Chairman of the Council. Unlike Mr Neuer's.

UPDATE: The same Human Rights Council engaging in Orwellian doublespeak, in so far as they have no intention of applying said resolution to Judaism. And the EU, which is a pale copy of the UN, follows along.

Where are the UNICEF donors of the Middle East?

Occasional Kesher Talk correspondent "Ben" (not to be confused with occasional Kesher Talk blogger Ben Kerstein):

Periodically, I get mail from UNICEF, generally asking me for money while telling me of the good they are doing, and how so many kids around the world have no medicine, food, water, clothes, etc. This is because I used to be a donor, and although they haven't seen a check from me in three years, they assume it's because of some simple oversight on my part and not any of the issues I brought up to them in a letter three years ago - none of which have been addressed, of course.

Lesson: Never expect any large charity, no matter how noble, to take the concerns of donors seriously. We are just money-piñatas to them, hit us enough, and money is sure to fall out. But that's not today's issue.

John Kerry announced this week he was not going to run for President this election cycle, leaving him free to "speak truth to power" by proclaiming that America is an international pariah among an audience of the like minded.

Hot Air has the video

Here he is posing, from left to right, with Amr Moussa, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Abdullah Gul, Foreign Minister of Turkey, Ahmed Mahmoud Nazif, Prime Minister of Egypt, Adil Abd al-Mahdi, Vice-President of Iraq, Mohammad Khatami, former President of Iran, and John Kerry, Senator from Massachussetts, U.S in a group photo after a plenary session on the Middle East during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007.

Trick or treat: It's UNICEF!

TOTBox.jpg Halloween is tonight, and across the country thousands of children will fan out across their neighborhoods carrying orange UNICEF boxes, as many children have done before them since 1950.

For the 56th consecutive year, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF will launch its time-honored Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign this fall. This year’s campaign will focus on the great tradition and history of the program that was started by children in Philadelphia. The signature orange Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF box and other materials for this year’s campaign are now available.

If you read this before sending your children out to collect dimes and quarters for the fund, you might want to review the checkered history of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, which exhibits the same blinkered view of global politics as its parent body the United Nations.

I was reminded of UNICEF’s programs when I got an email from a friend:

And how did you observe UN Day?

Kesher Talk reader and invited guest blogger who keeps making excuses for not posting Alex Bensky reminds us that Tuesday was UN Day.

. . . . How did you mark the occasion? I did so appropriately.

First, I just wasted a lot of money. Then I happened on a scene where a crime was in progress but I just shook my head, muttered, "They shouldn't do that," and went by. Finally I insulted some Jews. I would have stolen some money but the opportunity didn't present itself.

Best,
Alex

Gosh, Alex, thanks for reminding me. The daily doings of the UN are so important to me that I completely forgot about posting this until the next day. I can't wait for UN Day in 2007!

War crimes for thee but not for me

Apropos of Monday's conference about the UN, this is what it all comes down to. A friend emails:
Here's a tidbit of news that might be interesting to your liberal hawk board - or anyone else you care to share it with. The only problem is that you have to keep my name and email address out of it because it happened at hubby's base.

Remember the two Americans who were killed in Afghanistan a few days ago? It was reported on the news, and that was about all that was on the news.

Well, the reason they were killed was that the Taliban terrorists dressed up like Afghan military in order to get in close. When they did get in close, they opened fire and killed our guys, who were trying to work with Afghan troops in the area.

That, my dear, is a war crime by any UN standards. Can you imagine the uproar if WE were doing that? But of course, the media doesn't report it. Not only that, but there are still people complaining about OUR tactics! And our guys are under merciless orders that have them hesitating before they shoot in defense of their lives for fear of being charged with murder for shooting someone who was trying to kill them.

I'm probaby preaching to the choir with this, though. After all, once you understand how they hide behind children to take potshots at troops and then wail an scream war crimes when the children they are hiding behind get caught in the crossfire...

I just don't see how anyone can not recognize how evil they are.

The U.N. and Beyond: United Democratic Nations

"The U.N. and Beyond: United Democratic Nations" was a symposium presented by The Hudson Institute and its subsidiary, Eye on the UN.

Why has the UN failed to live up to its founding ideals of defending democracy and freedom on a global scale? Can the UN be reformed? If not, can a union of democratic nations committed to human rights and individual liberty provide a viable alternative to the UN?

It was held in New York City on the 5th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2006 - connecting the terrorist attacks to decades of corruption and malfeasance at the United Nations.

Below is a schedule of panels and speakers. (Have this many famous neocons ever been gathered in one place?) I have audio for most of them, which I will post over the next few days, in new posts. Check for audio link next to each session.
The Hudson Institute, after first approving the audio, reversed its position, since it intends to publish a book of the proceedings.

Hudson Institute Conference on the future of the UN

I will be attending this event tomorrow:

The UN and Beyond: United Democratic Nations

September 11, 2006, 9:00 AM-6:00 PM
Union League Club, New York, NY

This conference, which is by invitation only, will offer a comprehensive examination of the United Nations. Why has the UN failed to live up to its founding ideals of defending democracy and freedom on a global scale? Can the UN be reformed? If not, can a union of democratic nations committed to human rights and individual liberty provide a viable alternative to the UN?

A distinguished group of national and international leaders will take part in this all-day symposium, in addition to noted journalists and policy experts.

Speakers include Ambassador John Bolton, Natan Sharansky, Senators Norm Coleman and Tom Coburn, Bill Bennett, Jed Babbin, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Claudia Rosett, Anne Bayefksy. (It also says President Bush, but we'll see.)

I expect to post my report Monday night, so check back Tuesday for the latest reports.

Another double-standard: the Law of Return

So we knew that that Israel was being treated differently from any other nation in the global obsessive interest in its fence, along with a total disinterest in the many fences other countries have erected for similar purposes.

So you probably assumed that Israel's Law of Return was not the only such law operating anywhere, and you would be right. Jonathan Edelstein has listed the Laws of Return for as many countries as he can find. There are over 20 of them, from Armenia to Ukraine. Are any of these nations being excoriated on an international stage for their unpardonable racism in according expedited citizenship to particular ethnic groups? Do you have to ask? Human Rights Watch scapegoats Israel again

Human Rights Watch is predictably holding Israel responsible for most of the civilian casualties, and accusing Israel of "war crimes". HRW has a history of bias against Israel, for examples its active participation in demonizing Israel and Jews at the 2001 Durban "antiracism" conference.

NGO Monitor fisks HRW's analysis of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, and concludes that HRW distorts definitions of international law to excuse Hezbollah and make the "war crimes" accusation fit Israel.

Daled Amos links to some examples which disprove HRW's claims. Omri Ceren gives two examples here and here of Israel going out of her way to minimize civilian casualties.

UPDATE: The NY Sun has criticized HRW's condemnations of Israel, and HRW director Kenneth Roth has defended his organization in letters to the editor. NGO Monitor has recorded the caustic correspondence (which includes calling Torah law "primitive" and quoting the founder of HRW on his discomfort at what it has become). Powerline has all the links.

Tigerhawk examines the HRW report "Fatal Strikes: Israel's Indiscriminate Attacks Against Civilians In Lebanon." This is a different report than the one analyzed by NGO Monitor. Tigerhawk finds that HRW's recommendations are not in accordance with international law. If you read both of these critiques, you come away with the impression that HRW has no idea what international law actually says.

Through the eyes of a UN peacekeeping specialist

DBD072006.jpg

This post drew a response from someone claiming to be "a logistics specialist with the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (UNDPKO)." The grasp of reality shown in his comment leads me to believe he is telling the truth. It is an unvarnished glimpse into the worldview of a UN peacekeeping staffer.

Ben hoisted him by his own . . . . er, addressed his points very thoughtfully in the next comment, but didn't try to tackle everything, for example, the fact that the guy still thinks there was a "Jenin massacre." So if you want to clear up any loose ends, just be as friendly about it as Ben, okay? I will delete anything abusive. The UN staffer is being polite to us, we should return the favor.

Scroll down to long comment, it's about #10 under this post.
