Gathering of Eagles at West Point
Sorry this is last minute. I just got burned out and couldn't stand to look at the blog for a week. But I'm back now.
To join our Band of Veterans and Citizen Patriots on
Saturday, May 26, 2007
At 8:00 am
in the Town of Highland Falls, NY
With the intent of rallying to support our troops and their mission In the face of organized Moonbat protesters Intent on demeaning their service and disrupting their graduation from West Point.
I have also been told via email that....
There is Wi-Fi at the McD's and our plan to to have as many bloggers reporting our counter to these insurgents.
The Left has been planning this for awhile now. They are taking trains, bus, cars whatever so they can so they can disrupt the Graduation ceremony. Cheney will be there which really makes them crazy.

"Should I call someone or is that being racist?"
The hazards of political correctness:
. . . When the teen and another employee went into a back room and began the conversion of the tape, they saw a group of bearded men wearing "fundamentalist attire" and shooting "big, f-ing guns," the teen later told co-workers. Throughout the 90-minute-long tape, above the booming gunfire at a Pennsylvania target range, the jihadists could be heard screaming "God is great!"The two employees "freaked out," their co-worker recalled.
At first, the teenage clerk didn't know what to do, his pal said. "Dude, I just saw some really weird s-," he frantically told his co-worker. "I don't know what to do. Should I call someone or is that being racist?"
What if his friend had said, "Whoa, dude, that's way racist."

Good Neighbors on Siniora
Good Neighbors is a group effort by some Arab, Israeli, and other Middle Eastern bloggers, formed in the wake of the Lebanon War last summer. It is an attempt to continue the fragile online dialogue begun by Middle Eastern bloggers last spring, which continued during the war, although altered in tone. (The iconic example was one blogger sitting on his roof in Beirut, describing bombs falling in his neighborhood in a comment on an Israeli's blog.)
One of the Lebanese bloggers at Good Neighbors offers a gloss on a NYTimes op-ed by Lebanese PM Siniora; he begins:
Unfortunately, our Prime Minister comes off looking extremely stupid. Siniora’s Op-Ed is ludicrous when read from an international or Israel perspective, but makes sense when read in the Lebanese/Saudi context.
and proceeds to explain the subtext beneath each paragraph. Check it out.

Still You Fight for Me
Via Hot Air. Not very shabbasdik but way inspiring. Remember "Democracy Whiskey Sexy"? It's been a long time between heart-felt indie pro-Iraq War rock'n'roll songs. Bruce Springsteen - gritty champion of the working man - should have written this one, but he jumped on the Hollywood liberal bandwagon without stopping to think.
Allahpundit references the Aussie country approach to this topic, from Digger poster girl Beccy Cole, so let's rerun that one:

Rally Against Islamofascism
Today The United American Committee convened Rallies Against Islamofascism in several US cities, the main one at Ground Zero. Urban Infidel has a slideshow on Flickr.
The LA rally was held in front of CAIR's Southern California Office, and included hanging an effigy of bin Laden.
More to come.
UPDATE: Some photos below courtesy of Kesher Talk roving reporter Pamela Hall (who was also our infiltrator to the "End Israel Apartheid" events last month). Pamela helped organize this event and we hope to get a report from her soon.

The same old conspiracy theories about Iraq the Model
When the brothers who write Iraq the Model came to the US in December 2004, as guests of Spirit of America, I tracked their tour via all the many blogposts written about them.
It is gratifying to see President Bush quote them in his recent speech, but it's not surprising, since he met them when they were here (provoking another controversy) and has probably been checking in at their blog ever since. (Given how efforts to reconstruct Iraq have moved backwards and forwards for the past two and a half years, their conversation with the President has some poignancy.)
But many who fancy themselves human rights advocates pick their causes based on which ones the Bush administration supports: whoever Bush encourages, they disparage. Bush is the center of their universe, not human rights, and like the pre-Kepler astronomers, they must invent ever more elaborate and fanciful orbits to keep their solar system coherent.
So when the brothers came to the US, conspiracy theories proliferated, led by Juan Cole. I kept track of it all here. (A compendium of Juan Cole's conspiracy theorizing and factual impairment here.) These theories even reached the NYTimes resulting in an irresponsible article by an inexperienced and careless reporter. Even the brother who left the blog (over concerns about the meeting with the President) was offended by the bad journalism and the patronizing attempts by Cole & Co. to use the controversy for their own political agenda. (The recently-deceased journalist Cathy Siepp met the brothers in LA, and knew a few of the conspiracy-mongers personally, whom she fisked with relish.)
Now the same people revert to the same assumptions: If Bush advocates it, it must be tainted or false. If a person of a leftist-approved "oppressed group" (dark-skinned, poor, in a part of the world ruled at some point by Western powers) is optimistic or approves the efforts of our government (however flawed they may be), they must work for the CIA. Or be deluded, needing instruction from smug white Americans.
Of ocurse their point of view is not the only one, probably not even the majority one. But there are 25 million people in Iraq. They are not stamped out with a cookie cutter, they are individuals. Just as in the West, there are many points of view in Iraq, among these the desire for a classical liberal Western-style democracy. But to the conspiracy-mongers, that is the one point of view which cannot be sincere and must not be encouraged.

Egyptian dissidents detained
We publicized the arrests of Abdel Karim Suleiman and Alaa seif el-Islam. Alaa was subsequently released, but now the Egyptian government is cracking down on activists, arresting some of them at a demonstration.
The charge against the 21 arrested [and detained] was for engaging in a public demonstration against the newly proposed Egyptian constitutional reforms. These “reforms” were proposed and approved by the ruling party-the NDP- and opposed by every other opposition group and party in Egypt. The most controversial of these amendments to the Egyptian constitution is the one concerning the new terrorism law. This is basically the much despised and criticized emergency law that Egypt has been living under for the past 27 years updated with a different name.
More on the rally and arrests, documented in real-time by bloggers.

Afflicting the comfortable
Damian Penny drew my attention to these two articles about Ayaan Hirsi Ali - I think they are right on target. First Anne Applebaum:
Clearly, there is something about Ayaan Hirsi Ali that annoys, rankles, irritates. I am speaking as one who does not know Hirsi Ali - the outspoken Dutch-Somali critic of Islam - but as one who, while living in Europe, cannot seem to avoid meeting her detractors. Most recently I met a Dutch diplomat who positively glowered when her name was mentioned. As a member of the Dutch parliament, Hirsi Ali had, he complained, switched parties, talked out of turn and refused to toe whatever was the proper political line. Above all, it irritated him that she did not share his Dutch faith in political consensus.

Free Abdul Kareem: It's not over yet
Egyptian blogger Abdul Kareem (whom we wrote about here) has been sentenced to four years in prison for writing blogposts critical of Islam and the Egyptian government.
Nick Cohen is quick to proclaim the impotence of the blogosphere in securing Kareem's release, and Richard Landes begs to differ. Not only is it too early to say how this new empowerment of the individual will affect entrenched dictatorships in general, it is even too early to tell whether the blogosphere can effect the release of Kareem. He has just entered prison. The outcry has not subsided. It's not over till it's over.
For an analysis of how the blogosphere can influence mainstream media to effect change, view Richard Fernandez' talk at the Media as Theater of War conference. For a stirring sweeping view of how the blogosphere empowers individuals, watch Benjamin Kerstein at the same conference.

Free Abdul Kareem
Abdul Kareem is an Egyptian journalist and blogger who has been imprisoned by his government for criticizing Islam and advocating for liberalizing Egyptian society. Unlike most Egyptian bloggers, he uses his real name.
He is the first person to be prosecuted in Egypt for online writings; observers fear this may mark a new clampdown on freedom of speech. Amer, 22, a former student at al-Azhar University, wrote blog entries criticising Egypt’s al-Azhar religious authorities, President Mubarak and Islam. Charges against him include ’spreading information disruptive of public order and damaging to the country’s reputation’, ‘incitement to hate Islam’ and ‘defaming the President’.
Last year another Egyptian blogger, Alaa, was detained, but then released after the blogosphere generated mainstrem media publicity about his case.
The latest in this story is that his family has disowned him and his father says he should be killed. I would think this family is under immense pressure to do this, but it seems to be voluntary; their cowardice and lack of loyalty are despicable.

Free speech
Two different ways to handle speakers whose ideas you disagree with:
You can have men with scarves over their faces and kaffiyehs around their necks hustle the speaker off the stage before he has a chance to deliver his address.
Or you can silently ridicule the speakers in a clever and humorous way, while they deliver their address.
Guess which of these are perpetrated by which political "wing."
