Open Letter to the Dixie Chicks: What About the Terror in Mexico?

Dear Dixie Chicks:

You caused quite a stir when you said you were ashamed to be from the same state as the President. The backlash against your comments caused dark mutterings about suppression of free speech and artistic rights in the U.S. More recently, you spoke out about a murder case in Arkansas -- you are compassionate, and I credit that emotion.

Given your sensitivity to threats to artists and others, I would like to see you speak out against real repression of artists just south of our home state of Texas.

You see, singers there have more to worry about than whether people are questioning their patriotism and forcing them to play in smaller venues.

In Mexico, performers are being murdered. Puts your torments into perspective, doesn't it? According to this Associated Press story,

Borders: Viva Che, Down with Bush!

I've written about my exasperation with the Borders book chain before. Now I can extend that griping based on what I saw at the Borders in Fairfield, Connecticut today.

First, the store carries a line of figurines in the "Little Thinkers" series. I realize this is a set and not really a Borders' confection, but still, do the Little Thinkers need to include Einstein, Freud, Jane Austen, W.E.B. DuBois, Marx, Jesus and Shakespeare with . . . Che Guevera? What's his big idea in the world of intellectual discourse? I could see Borders throwing Che in with the others, but it added to the Chesyteria with a Che watch and a bio of him. Why not Milton Friedman or Thomas Jefferson?

So Borders covered the Che crowd downstairs, and then upstairs it had a display to warm the innards of the Bush Derangement Syndrome (BDS) contingent. It showed an "Out of Office Countdown" calendar for Bush, along with "Countdown to Victory" calendars for Clinton and Obama. Couldn't Borders at least find a "Countdown to Crackdown" calendar for Rudy Giuliani, or an "Impeach Hillary '09" calendar? The display also showed Bushism and similar products -- so predictable, so conventional.

Che 'n Chambers: NYT Can't Help Luvin' Dose Men

Bad, bad boys got heaps of TLC at the NY Times lately. Continuing its wall to wall coverage of all things Che Guevara, the TImes on Oct. 25 ran a thoroughly useless story titled, "Lone Bidder Buys Strands of Che’s Hair at U.S. Auction," with the helpful description of Guevara as "the famed revolutionary and cultural icon" and "Mr. Castro’s most famous and charismatic associate." If I recall, the story made the front page.

Even more ludicrous is the coverage of the arrest of preppy killer Robert Chambers on drug selling charges. On October 26, reporter Anemona Hartocollis just about wet her britches at the very sight of the middle-aged waste case, gushing,

Though he was unshaven, Mr. Chambers’s blue eyes were alert and, at 6-foot-4, he seemed commanding as he entered the courtroom.

Unspoken thought: "Bobby, I want to have your love child!!"

Jennifer Levin could not be reached for comment.

Meeting Resistance

UPDATE: Steven Vincent vs Molly Bingham: compare and contrast.

I saw a "video Op-Ed" at the NYT site, which was a prime example of trying so hard to be non-judgmental about nasty people that you squeeze yourself through your own asshole and out the other side. It is a 7-minute excerpt/spin-off from Meeting Resistance, a pro-insurgent piece of propaganda now playing in theaters around the world.

The short at the NYT site as of 6 PM EST is not loading - must be all the LGF and Hot Air readers checking it out. But you can also see it at Crooks and Liars. And here's the official trailer.

(There will be Q&A with the filmmakers after screenings of "Meeting Resistence" THIS WEEKEND in New York and Washington DC. More info at the end of this post. If you can make it, show up and, you know, ask questions.)

In addition to inserting tendentious quotes from unidentified 2007 polls into footage from 2004, these PR flacks for terrorists take the opportunity to fit in this week's wide misquoting of General Sanchez, demonstrating that - like the NYTimes - they didn't bother to read what Sanchez actually said. However, the Times plays this straight, presenting the video thus:

NYT's Handy Talking Points for Ahmadinejad

Friday's NY Times review of Ken Burns' "The War" qualifies as the most unhinged art review I've ever read. It starts not as a review but a cry from a panicked soul angered that the artist did not hew to the reviewer's (and the reviewer's employer's) world view. Get a load of Alessandra Stanley's painful meltdown :

The war was necessary, but is this approach?

The tone and look of Mr. Burns’s series, which begins Sunday on PBS, is as elegiac and compelling as any of his previous works, but particularly now, as the conflict in Iraq unravels, this degree of insularity — at such length and detail — is disconcerting. Many a “Frontline” documentary has made a convincing case that the Bush administration’s mistakes were compounded by the blinkered thinking of leaders who rushed to war without sufficient support around the world or understanding of the religious and sectarian strains on the ground. Examining a global war from the perspective of only one belligerent is rarely a good idea.

Campaign debates, standardized tests and game-show questions all suggest that as the global economy expands, Americans are growing more hidebound and parochial. And now comes a beautifully made telecourse on wartime America under the definitive title “The War.”

Somebody really likes this line of thinking. According to this Little Green Footballs posting, it sounds like Iran's Lider Maximo is picking up some great talking points for Stanley and her pals:

Buh bye, fascist troll

I just wanted to let everyone know that my long-time regular commenter, Scottish Leftist Rob, finally went too far, and I banned him. Some will say I should have banned him before, but I don't mind giving fools a lot of rope, Rob and I like a lot of the same music, and usually he was nice. I thought he was someone you could have a friendly political debate with. (Although he hated Cinnamon and Benjamin, for some reason, maybe because they could run rhetorical rings around him without breaking a sweat.)

If you want to know what pushed me over the edge, it was when he smugly advocated genocide. A real George Galloway clone, that one.

(I know the word "fascist" is way overused, but he defends Ahmedinijad and Assad and advocates eradicating half the word's Jews, more than Hitler murdered. So I think in this case the designation is apropos.)

Double standards for military commanders

RELATED: Who owns the Democratic Party.

Via Michelle Malkin's comments:

Interesting commentary on this the from the left, courtesy of Jane Hamsher;
The MoveOn ad said what Democrats could not and survive politically — Petraeus is acting as a politician, doing a politician’s job of spinning and his actions are not above criticism just because he’s got a bunch of ribbons on his chest that George Bush would like to hide behind. And it traveled. To join with the right and start firing arrows into their backs is both destructive from a movement perspective and displays tremendous naiveté about what it’s going to take to end this war.

So if you are John Kerry, with ribbons on his chest, you are a patriot! A HERO! and how DARE YOU - you disgusting excuse for an American if you question him and his patriotisms.

But Petraeus? He’s a politician. He’s scum. He “betrayed us.” - MoveOn said, and the democrats wanted to say, but they couldn’t ….

And another one:

On the Mall with A.N.S.W.E.R. and Friends

Scenes from the protests today, courtesy of the WaPo, which is estimating about 7000 attendees by 3 PM.

As a man walked by carrying a sign saying "9-11 Truth Now" a man on the corner asked, "I'm just wondering, what is the truth about 9-11?"

"We haven't been told the truth," the sign-man said. "That's the point."

The onlooker wasn't satisfied. "But what is the truth we haven't been told?" he asked again.

"That's it," came the reply. "We don't know because they won't tell us."

At 15th St. and New York Ave. a band of plaid-wearing demonstrators, most of them with bandanas over their faces, held an impromptu meeting to plan their confrontation with D.C. police.

"Is it OK with you guys if I go over to the cops and tell them we're going to cross the street?" one demonstrator asked his collegues.

Winning their assent, the young man approached a D.C. officer and said, "Are you guys going to slam and beat us if we cross the street?"

"Why don't you just cross with the light, then we don't have to bring in officers to block traffic," said Officer S. Weinfeld.

The demonstrator, foiled in his hope for a confrontation, said "Umm...ok," returned to his friends and walked them uneventfully across 15th St.

Non-sequitor of the day:

Apocalypse 'R' Us

Gary Alexander, the Recovering Apocoholic, wrote a chronology of the successive apocalypsi which shaped his consciousness, beginning with his birth just 62 years ago:

I was born in July 1945, the day the first atomic bomb exploded in Alamogordo, New Mexico. That mushroom crowd has haunted our lives ever since. As a teenager, I became convinced the world would end before I was 30. Too soon old…too late smart, I was very, very wrong:

My email list had fun with this topic. IC, who forwarded the link, added:

NYT on Chinese in Africa: Massage Parlors, Ho-Hum

A Saturday NY Times article, "Entrepreneurs From China Flourish in Africa," contained a throwaway reference that deserves some scrutiny in what it says, and the so-what lack of interest of the paper in its implications. The passage (emphasis added):

Today, in many of the countries where the new Chinese emigrants have settled, like Chad, Chinese-owned pharmacies, massage parlors and restaurants serving a variety of regional Chinese cuisines can be found; the Western presence, once dominant, has steadily dwindled, and essentially consists nowadays of relief experts working international agencies or oil workers, living behind high walls in heavily guarded enclaves.

I'm all in favor of entrepreneurs, but let's stop a minute to consider the nature of these "massage parlors." It could very well be these are staffed by therapuetic experts in Swedish, deep-tissue and other types of massage, certified and highly trained in this honorable activity.

On other other hand . . .

I don't think this guy has actually beaten up any Republicans. Because he probably doesn't know any. Or the friends he would never suspect are deep in the closet. And because he's a peaceful live-and-let live kinda liberal guy.

Mearsheimer groupie

UPDATE: Video of Mearshimer at Kos, below. I guess Little Miss Democracy Arsenal likes father figures....

I was surfing some links propogating from the Sgt. Aguina kerfluffle, and came to this:

The father of Realism...at Kos
check out the one comment.... and here's the next post:

The Middle East Panel was actually kind of...fun

The coolest part about this panel really to me was John Mearsheimer. Juan Cole (of whom I am now a giant fan) did a fantastic job of really making the Middle East accessible, but still bringing in major fire power. I really don’t think people at Kos realized just how influential Mearsheimer is on the entire field of foreign policy, which made it all that more interesting. I have to say, that as someone who’s read everything he’s ever written, I was SHOCKED when people interrupted him, or questioned his judgment on the idea that oil companies did not, in fact, orchestrate the war in Iraq. He is, after all, John friggin Mearsheimer. I’m sure when he speaks at the Council on Foreign Relations, people don’t interrupt him. I don’t think the Presidents he’s counseled interrupt him. Mearsheimer was totally into it which was fantastic....

Gag me. I guess Mearsheimer didn't sleep alone that night. . . .

PS. The wonderfulness of Juan Cole.
